  1. I can see gomez more happening espically if hernandez is sold to Seville and would be great if Arnie does stay. Got to say now we have a good group off players so hate the window more than ever only seems to help teams who struggling who are desperate for a player to help them stay up

  2. Hold up play and pace in behind are crucial for a lone striker in our system (as well as goals of course). They need to be able to protect the ball and bring the likes of Anderson and Nasri/Lanzini into play in the final third, as well as offer the threat of running away from defenders, (to get on the end of through balls/balls over the top) meaning the opposition are reluctant to push up against us and try to box us in our own half.

  3. Piatek reminds me of a young Vardy,Gomez seems very physical & not shy to mix it up…..as a lone ST I would pick Piatek but as a attacking combination Gomez👍🏾

  4. I'd grab him and I would seriously go for the title next season. The squad is good enough. If Leicester could win it, West Ham can too. None of this "Let's try and get into the top six" stuff. Either try and win the league or play in the Championship should be the motto. The team is the strongest it's ever going to be. This is the time to do it. Nasri, Anderson, Arnautovic, Gomez (if he comes), Hernandez plus the subs coming off the bench, with Yarmolenko returning eventually – what a wonderful attacking line-up. It has depth too. Then you have the midfielders and defenders – Noble, Snodgrass, Rice, Diop, Balbuena, Zabaleta, Masuaku … Experienced and talented goalkeeper. Then on top of it, the club has an experienced title-winning manager. The owners are very supportive too.

Pellegrini has to improve the defending strategy though. "Attacking wins you games, defending wins you leagues." Even in the game against City, the club could have had a draw if they had watched the defending carefully. Look at how Santo organizes the defending. It's a very good defense. Nick a goal or two with this terrific attacking line up, and then spend the rest of the game protecting your goal advantage and your goal. Have a clean sheet and a 1-0 score and go to the next game and repeat the same. (Any goals on top of this goal are the cherry on top.)

Antonio has improved. I like his work rate. So long as he sticks to the channels down the flanks and doesn't get involved in the goal shooting, he's fine. He is like Sissoko, good at bombing down the field. Has good physicality.

West Ham should stick a 100 million price tag on Arnautovic and put him in games. This should scare off potential poachers. This is what Levy of Spurs does – he puts a 200 million price tag on Kane and a 150 million price tag on Alli, etc.

Arnie is still performing in games. I'd keep an eye on him. As soon as his work rate drops off or there's any hint that he's not playing sincerely, I'd bench him, with the message that he's going to stay on the bench for the rest of the contract if he doesn't perform for the club. The choice for him will be: put a 100% into games and play or spend the rest of the contract on the bench – he's not going anywhere. Most players will choose the former.

This also sends a strong message to other players who think of leaving because they get offers from elsewhere.

If you want to rise as a club, you have to retain your best players. Otherwise, your club is just an academy for development of players, the best of whom go to the bigger clubs. Your club never wins anything if it's continually losing its best players.

And if another club bites, you get a windfall. That's what happened with Coutinho. Liverpool tried to fight off potential poachers by putting a 190 million price tag on Coutinho. It's ridiculously high. But Barcelona took the bait and Liverpool got 190 million to buy new players with. No player is worth that much. If another club is foolish enough to pay that much, take the money and buy 3 or 4 players with it. In the end, he was no loss because they spent the money wisely and got Salah, who's even better than Coutinho. And they got VVD, Becker, Keita and Fabinho, strengthening the squad enormously, making the club proper title challengers this season.

Any club that pays 200 million for Kane will be making a similar mistake.

Leicester made a mistake selling Kante for the price they did (£32 million). Losing him was a big part of the reason why the club did so badly the subsequent year. They should have put a 150 million pound price tag on him. If they had kept him, they could have stayed a top 4/top 6 club. Now they've lost Mahrez – and look where they are now in the table – back to being a middling team. They also lose money not being in the top 4, so it was shortsighted to sell Kante for that amount.

OTOH, Spurs keeps its top 4 place and even builds a new stadium while doing it. They don't buy new players but that's because they keep their best players. No urgent need to replace any top player. Mousa Dembele only goes when they've squeezed out every last drop from him. They only let go the players they don't want. And with the money they get from being in the top 4, they put that money back into the club, to help pay the salaries of their best players.

And Arnie's got competition for his position too. With the arrival of Nasri, Pellegrini has more options in the attacking. Attackers have to fight harder for their place in first team or even just for game time.

If Gomez comes, this will increase. Competition for places improves the quality of the attacking. This was an area that was hit and miss for most of the season, so it was important to fix.

A strong midfield, and the defending and attacking are high in quality – it's a very good squad. Now Pellegrini has to close the gaps in his tactical management to compete with the best clubs in the league and challenge for the title.

  5. I think Gonzo is spot on. Even if Arnie could be persuaded to stay, if we give him more money, we should consider selling him anyway. We are not placing all of our eggs in one basket anymore like we used to. Lets move on.

  6. If there's any fire with the smoke, another reason Gomez might fancy it is that, injuries aside, Lanzini, Balbuena and Anderson have all flourished at WHU and also that he wouldn't feel isolated culturally.
