Senegal will play England in the Round of 16 on Sunday in a first-ever meeting between the two nations.
The current African champions have a chance to match, or even better, their scintillating run to the quarterfinals in 2002, when current coach Aliou Cisse was the captain and the team equalled the best performance by an African country at a World Cup.
Senegal had a must-win game against Ecuador in their final Group A match on Tuesday, and Kalidou Koulibaly duly scored the goal that sealed their place in the knockout rounds.
Coach Cisse has been forced to reinvent his forward line following an injury to the absent Sadio Mane, who sent the team a message before the match.
Koulibaly said the Bayern Munich striker has also been an inspiration for the team despite not being in Qatar.
