      Come on Ben! You played with Rio and Van Dyke is no Rio, also look at Liverpool past few seasons and tell me he hasn't look abit shaky! Van Dyke not even as good as Pally who racked up over 400 appearances for United and he definitely not better than Stam and that's just 3 United players! I'd take Des Walker over Van Dyke every day of the week and I've only named a few players from Prem era! Puyol! Maldini! Chielini! All better than Van Dyke too haha

      In the Premier league's history after Paul McGrath of Aston villa (1992/1993) and John Terry in 2003/2004, Van Djik is the only Defender to win the PFA award in 2019.

      Virgil van Dijk became the only defender to win this coveted accolade when he saw off competition from Ronaldo and Messi to be named the UEFA Men's Player of the Year in 2019.

      In its long and prestigious history, just three defenders have won the Ballon d'Or; Franz Beckenbauer (1972, 1976), Mathias Sammer (1996), and most recently, Fabio Cannavaro (2006)

      Apart from Franz Beckenbauer(1975), Bobby Moore (1970) and Roberto Carlos(2002) who placed second in the balon d'or trophy. Van Djik is the next on the list to achieve that feet. I agree he has suffered setbacks(ACL)and you may talk about longevity but at his peak he was a great.

      Ferdinand, Nesta, Cannavaro, Woodgate (prime), Vidic, Maldini, Baresi, Ramos, Campbell, King, Kompany, Cole, Terry, Stam. These were off the top of my head who are better than VVD.

      Can't blame Ben, how safe would he feel if he had a prime Van Dijk in front of him, you're not beating him in a race, in the air, one vs one.

      People forget he was the best CB in the league at Southampton Liverpool didn’t score a goal against them when he played there’s a reason city wanted him

      How Reece James was mentioned before Trent is beyond me. He’s played twice the amount of games James has and has better defensive stats..

      I think VVD's reputation gets a hit because he's not like this violent and ruthless defender and he kind of has this casual, nice guy personality that you don't want to associate with a defending player. I mean, wasn't the Newcastle red card this year his first ever red card? But I think, pre-injury, VVD at his peak was not only a black hole that attacks always died in, he could play the ball up pretty decently for a CB in a high press team. He used to always look really comfortable with the ball looking down the field for the play.

      Azpilicueta, synonym for consistency. Almost 350 PL games, RB, LB, CB, RWB. Probably one of the best defenders among full-backs in football hisotry. Marking, positioning, anticipation, 1v1. Technically really good player, good crosser of the ball, good passer, vision, even dribling sometimes. Physically also good, strong, in prime years quick, good in the air, great stamina. Always focused, always played with attitude, always good work-rate. Leader, both with his voice and example. And never injured, till last season when he was kicked in the head.

      He isnt though is he, hes not even that in the the Premiership arguable if he is a Liverpool. Hyypia was great for Liverpool. The Premiership has had Terry, Carvahal, Vidic, Ferdinand, Sol Campbell, Stam, Adams, Bruce, Pallister, King, Gallas Kompany, Irwin to name a few. Thats not even full backs, Ashley Cole is up there as could get into any side in any league. Cannavaro, Nesta, Maldini, Baresi, Puyol, Ramos, Pepe even if hes nuts, Lahm, Beckenbauer, Matthaus, Koeman, Zanetti, Cafu, Dani Alvez, Desailly, Thuram. Do people not have a memory past 3 years.

      Completely agree. We’ve never seen top class attackers look at a defender and think “nah” like they did to him. For 4 years he had no weakness, not one. Utter mental and physical dominance over opponents
