Wow an hour long. This will be good. I can onlu hope Jiu Jitsu returns to Kodakan Judo.
Of course I come across this video when i need to be working on my final paper. Well I got this saved to come back and watch. I can't wait!
Great content
Fascinating interview as always!
I would be curious to hear what either of you think of Armchair Violence's video on Jiu-Jitsu self defense (watch?v=eSxPYL10_so).
I love learning the history of jujutsu
As a jiujitsu player.. becoming proficient at (some) judo takedowns, throws, sweeps, as well as wrestling fundamentals is my ultimate goal. A complete grappler should be able to take you down, and finish you on the ground!
I love this, thank you Chadi! I’ve been waiting for this longer video with Professor Pedro.
I do question the statement about deep half though. I think there’s enough evidence to support its usefulness in a striking scenario. Your head gets hidden while you are off balancing them etc..thinking of Damien Maia, Wim deputter and some others.
I wouldn't want the sport of Jiu Jitsu. I'd want Gracie Jiu Jitsu, where it's Jitsu.
Amazingly interesting interview Chadi! Enjoyed it a lot
Medi… horrible technique…
The valente bros revisionism is so evident, as if those gracie bros had philosophy. Bjj is know in brazil to be associated with thugs and from robert drysdale's accounts the brothers were!
The gracie cult version of history is to make more people fall in line with this narrative so their brand can grow and have them get more students and more money.
Interesting talk, its good to know what they're claiming, thanks Chadi for keeping an open mind and being able to talk to him.
Edit* this is almost exactly the opposite of what robert drysdale says about bjj
This was wonderful!!!
We need someone like Dr rhadi Ferguson to have to facilitate this interview as i feel that Mr Valente is being heavily biased.
Robert drylsdale would definitely hqve something to say about about many of the points beimg made
Una magnífica entrevista a un gran entrevistado 👍❤️👍
passionant!
Loved this conversation.
This does not jive. Kano did not just limit the groundwork, he outright removed throws performed via locked joints as the method of Kuzushi for safety reasons. This was perhaps the most profound difference between Jujutsu and Judo at the beginning no matter how you spell it.
Listening to Pedro's depth of knowledge is like watching Victor Wooten play bass.
Great video, my friend!
Very interesting 👍🏻
You should be ashamed!!! Charlatans
Additional elements to consider in thinking of what was before Kano in the context of randori and valuing tachi-waza over newaza:
1. Kumi Uchi grappling with armor, limited armor, and no armor.
2. Sumo
3. The Sword of Japan and its symbolic nature during the end of the Edo period.
Chadi have thought doing a video talking about WJF world judo federation, the rule set is different they still allow partial leg grabs.
Thank you Chadi and Professor Valente. I've trained Judo and Jujutsu 27 years. One thing my old Sensei told when I was struggling as a yellow belt, 'remember, you only need to be good at three or four techniques, all our bodies are different, you can do things I can't since you're tall, I can do things you can't because I'm small'. Stuck with me forever and I teach the same.
Thanks!
This was an absolutely phenomenal discussion! Filled with more insights than I can remember finding in any similar format in a long time!
This dialog is valuable by all means; chadi is the man and he will go down in history as a great preserver of the arts
hmmmm…its true that basic submissions like RNC, armbar, etc are the ones that end the most MMA fights, but they are also the ones that MMA fighters are most likely to learn and most likely to attempt. i wonder how much this is skewing the numbers, and if they seem much more effective than they are just because they are attempted so often
Judo= jiu jitsu. But Gracie jiu jitsu is Judo brazilian style😊
Excellent, sport guys should watch this. I feel sport guys struggle with identity issues. Many say Gracie Jujitsu is outdated or too basic. This video should help them understand the Helio side.
In the 1950s Judo was still well rounded as a grappling art in Judo clubs.
But due to combat sports Judo split into two specialized sports:
A. Tachiwaza specialization.
B. Newaza specialization.
It's very rare to find Judo clubs today that equally train both Tachiwaza & Newaza.
And that should be the future of Judo clubs. . .To return to the more well balanced Judo of the past.
And we must even incorporate atemi waza again, to be taught to shodan rank judoka, like we see taught to WW1 and WW2 infantrymen and light infantry commandos.
Judo was once the most complete military unarmed combat defense & self defense art before the focus upon competitive sport rules changed the way Judoka trained.
The same thing happened to Okinawan Ryu kara te after it went to mainland Japan then further spread abroad. . .it became a method of fitness and sport after the Japanese adopted kara te from Okinawa.
Which caused traditional Okinawa kara te masters to call Japanese kara te gymnastics.
When humans change the intent, the focus, create rulesets, make combat a sport with a focus emphasizing one aspect , the art changes over time and becomes something different.
"Specialization is for insects. Humans must be eclectic."
The part about preserving details with kata is so true. Kata is just a mnemonic device. Too often people build them up into something else! That and, traditionally kata in karate is performed solo AND with and against another person.
I train at one of the rare gyms in Europe that focuses the half of the training on groundwork. We get taught triangle chokes from different positions + Armbars from guard that you dont see in BJJ etc
This is profound. Amazing interview. You both had enormous knowledge to contribute.
Thank you Chadi for creating and sharing this wonderful interview. You and your guess are wealth of both historical practices and presen application. Not much has changed in one hundred fifty years. Once again thank you and God bless you and your family.
