A Changing Canelo Alvarez, David Morrell Jr.’s Perspective.
David Morrell Jr. is steadily ascending the super middleweight ranks, although he hasn’t reached the summit just yet. Despite his limited professional experience, the former amateur standout is confident in his skills, even eyeing a potential clash with the likes of Canelo Alvarez.
Canelo, having secured victories over Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders, and Caleb Plant, unified all four world titles in his division, cementing his status as an undisputed champion. But times have changed.
Morrell (9-0, 8 KOs) eagerly tunes in whenever Alvarez (59-2-2, 39 KOs) enters the ring. However, the 25-year-old can’t help but notice a difference in Canelo’s recent performances compared to a few years ago.
While Morrell reluctantly acknowledges this shift, even Alvarez himself has admitted to not being his best lately.
Nevertheless, Alvarez vowed to show he’s still at the top of his game come September 30th against Jermell Charlo, a fighter who typically competes at 154 pounds. Morrell questions the choice of Charlo as an opponent when there are formidable contenders in the super middleweight division.
After pondering the decision, Morrell believes it’s because “Canelo doesn’t want to face anyone truly challenging.”
