Roy Keane left Manchester United after criticising his teammates for a 4-1 defeat to Middlesbrough in 2005. Sir Alex Ferguson said he had no choice but to let him go, otherwise he would’ve lost control and be viewed differently by his players.

  1. if keane was English/British he'd have a statue at old trafford. united prefer a drunken player who was great for 3 years and drunk for 5 to have a statue

  2. I love sir Alex but he was wrong on a few occasions. Could of handled becks and Keane very differently and showed a bit more loyalty. Plus jaap stam was one he openly admitted himself

  3. Brian Robson
    Steve Bruce
    Japp Stam
    David Beckham
    Roy Keane
    Van Nistelroy
    Carlos Tevez
    Problems with Cristiano Ronaldo
    Problems with Wayne Rooney
And more that I haven't mentioned
A laundry list of top quality talent, most of which left the club.
    The common denominator? Alex Ferguson.

    Figure it out.

  4. Listen to both sides of the story, it looks like they wanted Keane out, tried in summer by targeting Keane, didn’t work. Kept trying, then something came up which wasn’t released to the public. Keane said the whole team watched it and only Carlos coach and Van Der Sar had an issue/spoke up.

If anything Fergie looks like a coward. I mean couldn’t even strip Keane of the captaincy, had to terminate the contract…

  5. I hope one day they bury the hatchet. They’ve had a huge impact on each other’s lives and at times it looked like a father-son relationship. Fergie didn’t have that rapport with other players

  6. The irony of Fergie’s comments here after he infamously tore in to his Aberdeen side after they beat Rangers in the Scottish Cup. He wasn’t happy with their performance and slated them on TV literally on the pitch as everyone celebrated. He later came to regret it and admitted he was just emotional because he wanted to not just beat Rangers but to ‘smash them’ as he said in a later interview.

Roy Keane just wanted what was best for Man Utd. He expected excellence and was a driving force for that. Fergie would’ve done well to remember that. Suggests that he had an ulterior motive to moving him on

  7. Sorry Fergie but I'm afraid a Big Majority are behind Roy Keane on this including Ex Players that was the Video,,,Also remember you lost 4-1 in that game was Roy supposed to congratulate the team on their Performance,,,,Do me a Favour

  8. He let rooney get away with a fair bit but was dealing with a younger guy and the future of the club, if rooney was older different storey

  9. Fergie was lying here, and not for the first time. He lied to get situations where he wanted them throughout his managerial career, as all managers have done to greater or lesses extent. Keane was remarkably silent for years around some of the decisions Fergie made, and when he criticised players in the past, Fergie was beyond silent or hopped on board. Other personalities didn't want a man around, who took no prisoners and who was always going to speak his mind, if the team weren't winning. Fergie knew exactly the kind of shortcoming the club was going to have to accept going forwards. Keane didn't fit anymore. End.
