Celtic look set to seal the signing of Aaron Mooy as Ange Postecoglou beefs up his options in the centre of the park. According to Mike McGrath, Daily Telegraph’s Football reporter, Mooy will disappoint a number of Championship teams to become Celtic’s fifth signing of the summer.
The 31-year-old is a free agent after leaving Shanghai Port in the summer. The player was commanding a huge salary but decided to walk away from the deal as his wife remained in Scotland.
The central midfielder spent time with St Mirren before returning to Australia. This move to his homeland allowed him time to improve before a move to Manchester City. Despite never featuring for the English club, he impressed on loan at Huddersfield, before making the move permanent. He then moved to Brighton for £12m following The Terriers’ relegation. Not only can Mooy play in the advanced role, vacated by compatriot Tom Rogic, he can also play in a holding role. This was his primary role with Brighton, often breaking up play and getting his team up the park whether by dribbling or passing.
The 31-year-old already lives in Glasgow as he has a Scottish wife. The move will suit all parties as the club add quality and experience in the centre of midfield, something that Ange has been keen to do since Tom Rogic and Nir Bitton left in the summer.

Mooy is perfect for Anges squad right now in so many ways – ball retention, dictation of play, pace control, dead balls and playing out from the back against a high press (aka rangers!) – he needs the games and conditioning for the upcoming world cup, the scottish missus etc but most importantly for him its his last crack at the champions league. Top bloke, experience for the dressing room, competition for places, quality in depth – free transfer, no brainer!

Aaron's work rate is on a very high level. A great pick up for the hoops.
Sad how many of these latest comps fail to show Mooy's best. His best was done for the Socceroos, Brighton and Huddersfield. He made the Championship look like easy mode on his day. And then he walked into the Premier League like he had been there before. Has technical ability on both feet that is only hindered by his lack of pace. He might be older now… but his whole career has been doing the most with very little physical advantages. Smaller, less fit and slower… and yet he still made players look like they were in slow motion chasing him. He's too smart to be anything other than a great signing for any team in Europe, let alone the SPFL. He was called the 'Bald Pirlo' for a reason at Huddersfield. And like Pirlo I imagine he'll only get classier with age. Him moving to China was a disappointment because he is probably still Australia's best player when he's on it. It was never a sign of his ability, just his willingness to do anything to take care of his family.
I remember a story of his Youth Coach trying to force him to practice with his weak foot while using a wall target… only to discover that he already was using his weak foot and was just that good on both. He's the quietest person you'll ever meet but as one of his PL team mates once said– once he starts playing he seems like a completely different person. Football brings out the best of him. And there's a reason Tom Rogic called him and James Forrest his favourite players to play alongside.
He'll slot right in the squad and will get decent game time if he stays fit. His only flaw is he is a very specific type of player and others need to get used to how he changes the pace of it all. He'll suddenly speed things up with an insanely placed long ball and then fake the next to slow down everything and recycle the ball in areas he has no right keeping the ball. He is difficult to read and that extends to his teammates and manager… thankfully Ange always knew how to get the best out of him. And if his teammates get used to him… Celtic will have entire teams slipping up and getting torn apart by out-of-nowhere long ball assists. He adds something that very few people have, even at professional level, a solid football IQ used to perfection and technical ability just shy of the best in the world.

If he’s any good why is he signing for us instead of Sunderland Barnsley Birmingham Nottingham Forrest etc In our farmer’s league he’ll be up against Livingston Dundee Motherwell st mirren Ross county etc. what kind of challenge is that. As for European football we were an embarrassment last season getting knocked out of three European competitions in one season. Against wee teams. It like all of you I’ll get carried away when we beat Kilmarnock Dundee United. Hamilton etc.
