Ten Hag trash talked Davies defense ahead of the game so Davies thwarted the early goal that Man U would have scored then sat back on defense all game. Then Rashford switched sides late and on his only break Davies ran past him to collect the ball like Rashford was a clumsy toddler. Davies was solid all game.
This is being so blown out of proportion by our Canadian media. He didn't even say Davies was a BAD defender, he said his weakness was against 1v1 dribblers WHICH IT IS. His exact quote was "Davies is not a great defender against the dribble", he was NOT saying he was overall a poor defender. Where Phonzie thrives is his recovery speed which makes up for a lot of his defensive short comings.
Go look at his defensive stats 1v1 against dribblers. He only makes 47.2% of tackles against dribbler which is in the BOTTOM 17th percentile of defenders in top 5 leagues. He does suck against dribblers and Ten Hag was not wrong in his assessment. Should he have said it? Probably not. But I've already seen OneSoccer, TSN and SportsNet misinterpret and misrepresent what was actually said.

When he had first arrived in Munich, Davies was given minutes in the attack. And he was poor. The move to LB saved his Bayern career and allowed him to reach a world class level. Teams at Bayern's level also have better attackers. That's why Davies is not going to be given much of a chance to develop as an attacker with Bayern. Canada don't have better wide attackers, which is why Davies plays in the attack for them. With Canada, he should be played as a left-midfielder or a left wingback. As his game matures, he may be able to play closer to goal.
