The fact Southgate cannot see that he is the one throwing Maguire under the bus is very concerning about a manager’s ability to see the bigger picture. He should be protecting Maguire by not putting him in the firing line. It’s obvious Maguire has low confidence at the moment, so why don’t you wait to build it up rather than putting him i the team?
Sorry if this was any other player he would be grilled. Maguire, I don't care what status or PR moves you're making to get the UK to sympathise with you, you can't get away with this…

The "right" for Harry Maguire to play for England is that he has been picked by Gareth Southgate who is the England manager. We are slave to Southgate´s subjective opinion on who he wants playing in the England squad. That's where I leave that.
It is then the "right" of any pundit and football fan to have a different opinion and voice it. In that regard, Southgate can think whatever he wants about the criticism – if it's unfair or harsh – people still have the right to their opinion.
From my perspective it kinda looks pathetic that a grown man's mother is "defending him" on media plattforms. Harry need to get in front of that and tell his mum to not add fuel to the fire regardless of how charming it is that his mother is standing up to him.
Harry Maguire is just a footballer that is doing what he loves to do – train and play football. And he's getting compensated well for his efforts. More power to him. If the England manager thinks that he is good enough for the team, then everyone is going to have to live with that. It is what it is. It's fun to see the passion around football – it's part of the experience. To me Harry plays because he's appointed. It's that simple. 🤷
