In the first three games of the season Arsenal have regularly moved into a 3-1-6 against teams using a low block. Whereas, against Manchester United, Arsenal used the more familiar 3-2-2-3 or 2-3-5, depending on the position taken up by Ben White.
This allowed Arsenal to overload Manchester United’s defensive line. To combat this Manchester United moved either Casemiro or Erikson into the defensive line to remove the attacking overload. This did create space centrally for Nketiah to move into and receive and combine with other players.
Arsenal did initially struggle to exert control on the game. The wide trio of Zinchenko, Martinelli and Havertz became vital in Arsenal’s ability to dominate the game. Through a combination of dual width and Havertz dropping deep, they could isolate Wan Bissaka generally resulting in Martinelli in behind or in a 1v1. Allowing Martinelli to enter the area for a cut-back or deliver a cross from the wider areas.
