Connor Roberts’ delightful early strike got them off to the best start possible tonight, before Nathan Collins’ header gave them a two-goal cushion on the stroke of half-time.
This very much resembled an end-of-season clash between one team in desperate need of a win and another with little to play for.
Burnley should have been out of sight by half time, but despite an improved showing from Southampton after the interval they held on for a clean sheet, three points and a huge boost in their bid to avoid relegation.
