Jordan Pickford suffers comical own goal as Everton keeper has nightmare vs Sheffield Utd
Jordan Pickford has left red faced after his own goal put Sheffield United ahead in an early season bottom of the table clash.
The Toffees had led early on but trailed going into the break after Cameron Archer’s effort cannoned off the post before hitting Pickford in the back and going into the net. The Blades star had already beaten Pickford with a cool finish to level the scores in Yorkshire.
His curling effort then looked set to put the hosts in front, but it came off the post, only to hit Pickford on the back as he’d dived to spot the initial effort. The goalkeeper’s face was telling, knowing full well he could’ve done nothing to prevent Sheffield United taking the lead.
The contest already feels like a must win for both teams, who have lost all three games so far this term. Abdoulaye Doucoure put the Toffees ahead early on, but Sean Dyche must now attempt to mastermind a comeback if his side are to get their first points of the season.
Pickford and Everton needed a win on the final day last term to avoid the drop having become regular relegation battlers in recent seasons. The England No 1 will need to be among his side’s top performers if they are to retain their top flight status.
Jordan Pickford ‘cursed’ as Everton goalkeeper concedes unfortunate own goal
Jordan Pickford’s misfortune delighted Sheffield United fans on Saturday in one of the most unfortunate own goals you’ll ever see.
The Everton stopper could only watch as the ball bounced into the back of the net having cannoned off the inside of the post and hit him on the back.
Cameron Archer’s strike was rewarded by the slice of luck as Pickford looked on in disbelief and fans on social media couldn’t help but chuckle as the hosts took a 2-1 lead.
One fan said: “Pickford is cursed. What the f*** man.” A second added: “It’s official, Jordan Pickford is cursed.” A third joked: “Divock Origi has been back in the Prem for a few hours and Pickford has already been cursed.”
Pickford let out a roar and smiled in disbelief as the home fans celebrated the goal, with both sides looking to pick up their first point of the season.
TNT Sports then reported that the 29-year-old used some colourful language when heading down the tunnel after the break.
The goal came after Abdoulaye Doucoure gave Sean Dyche’s men the lead before Archer scored following good work from Old McBurnie inside the Everton box.
The score was back level early in the second half after Arnaut Danjuma scored his first Premier League goal for the club following Nathan Patterson’s cross.
Everton went into the game rock bottom of the table having lost their first three games, level on points with the Blades following matching results.
The Toffees faced another disappointing transfer window with Alex Iwobi joining Fulham, but did secure a notable deal for Beto from Udinese.
Other arrivals included loan deals for Jack Harrison and the aforementioned Danjuma, both joining until the end of the season.
