In the 2013 summer transfer window, Arsenal famously – or infamously – bid £40 million, plus £1, for Liverpool’s star man Luis Suárez.

The Gunners were told by the player’s agent, Pere Guardiola, that Suarez had a £40 million release clause written into his Liverpool contract – but the bid was rejected, and it turned Arsenal’s recruitment into a laughing stock.

Ten years on, HITC Sevens takes at perhaps the most important Premier League transfer that never happened, the truth behind the contested clause in Suarez’s contract, and the legacy of football’s most famous failed transfer bid.

  1. He deffo broke contract law. Arsenal should have had some balls about them and took Liverpool to Court.

Henry's comments about it are idiotic and just makes him sound even more typically American being upset that a Player can leave their contract if they are bought for multiple millions by another Club – something that has to happen with the blessing of him and Liverpool lol.

  2. Tbh, this kinda makes it even more banter era defining. Liverpool literally just said no to Arsenal even when they actually had no right to 😂

  3. Arsenal have been the subject of ridicule over the years resulting from this bid though I personally don't think they did anything to deserve it.

What was so strange about offering 40 mil for a player worth around 40 mil?

  4. Thanks for that, I never really understood the extra pound and I never really understood why it was a bid. Why pay more than a release clause? So basically, it was a matter of Liverpool's lack of understand of Tort. Strange that no legal action was taken but Wenger has always been a gent. I was actually rather pleased that he didn't join Arsenal, there's something fundamentally unnerving about a racist with Pica disorder.

  5. This was just embarrassing by Arsenal at the time, my friend is an Arsenal fan and i remember the day like it was yesterday when he rang me telling me to stick on sky sports news. He was in a pile of laughter it was and still is 1 of the most funny and cringe things i have ever seen 😂😂

  6. Best German players in the premier league of all time. (Day 541)

I will not give up until the video is made or Alfie himself tells me to stop. Everyone else telling me that will be ignored.

If you don't believe my number, just go back to the previous videos. I'm at the bottom most of the time, but I'm there.

  7. "Football is a game of fine margins, and in such moments, decades can be defined" that was beautifully put. 🤌❤

  8. The greatest season perfomance on a Liverpool N°7 Jersey in the history of the Premier League. I know Liddel perfomance was more important tho but I just wish somebody's elder have seen him would tell me just how good was Nienhuwenhuys during his prime I'm sure there has to be somebody alive today whose grandfather saw him wear that jersey.

  9. Bidding £1 more and thinking that's going to buy someone's loyalty is like the firms who give people a few pence over the minimum wage to make it up to a 'round figure' – it's pretty much a sign of "we're going to make a really obvious 'look we're doing you a favour' when really, if we could pay you less, we would"

  10. Can you please make a video on the ongoing controversy on Luis Rubiales forcibly kissing Spanish midfielder Jenni Hermoso during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Trophy Presentation and backlash/anger that Rubiales’s subsequent actions have caused?

  11. Suarez revealed himself over and over again. I don’t care how many goals he scored. He’s a poor excuse of a man. His character is deplorable.

  12. I have a new suggestion for you: With the transfer of Ernest Nuamah from Nordsjælland to Molenbeek, and immediate loan to Lyon, we've seen what should be the most controversial transfer of the window. For that reason, I suggest that you do a video on multi-club ownership groups and bridge transfers.

  13. The editing at 11:15 is misleading. Branislav Ivanovic (Chelsea) was the player Suarez bit during in England, not Chiellini. Strange mistake to make at the newspaper images used clearly describe Chiellini as Suarez's 3rd victim, not his 2nd.

  14. Hey, Alfie,
I recently saw a picture of all european treble winners and something caught my attention. Between 1966 and 1999 there were four treble winners, whilst between 2008 and 2023 there were six. Could you please make a video explaining the reason for that?
    Thanks
