On June 7, just a week before his birthday – Lionel Messi would shock the world when he would announce that the next and possibly the final chapter of his career – would be in the Good OL USA playing for Inter Miami.

That’s right, the skilled footballer we’ve ever seen decided to go to a league where a 38 year old Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored 31 goals in 31 games.

But honestly, after watching Messi look like he’s in his absolute prime, I can’t help but just absolutely LOVE IT. And perhaps, Lionel Messi turned down all those other offers because he saw a chance that many others for the past decade brushed off – the chance to make the MLS great and convince America just how wonderful this beautiful game is.

  1. Messi is THE GOAT, ONE and ONLY but i am "afraid" noone can match Saudis, Neymar is right out of his prime and went to SA and many Europe players in their prime might do it in next 2 years..

  2. Eh, what US really need to make Americans love soccer is a US soccer superstar. At least good enough to win World Cup that is. Really hard to see Americans genuinely care about soccer more than others unless US wins a world cup

  3. The USA should be happy that the best player in the history plays in their country. They should watch videos of him in his prime to understand how good he was in his prime.

Fun fact about Messi's prime: He played on a higher level in his fifth best season than CR7 in his best season

  4. i only wish they had the club world cup held annually and just expand the teams to 12~16 so that teams from all over the world can play agianst each other. one off ties once every month or two.
one of the only ways to really put "soccer" on the map is to show that there's decent enough quality and entertainment in the MLS. That they can be somewhat competetive against even european teams at least in one off ties.

  5. Americans do love Soccer just look at its rise in popularity over the past decade. It’s just that it’s playing catch-up to American football, basketball and Baseball. Those sports’s influences are waning over time but football/soccer is growing.

  6. The only problem with growing “soccer” in America is that we have too much other sources of entertainment. In sports alone there are 4 major sports already competing for the viewers attention. It’s going to take a while for soccer to catch up. It’s going to take a catalyst like the men’s national team reaching major success to get the country as a whole to buy in.

  7. The best sport in the world…. The best player of the best sport in the world… Americans should understand that even Michael Jordan is nothing in comparison to Messi. Total global domination.

  8. I wonder why some or most of the football fans have no idea that the first name of this sport was soccer – a short term used by the British for "association football" since the 19th century – while "rugger" was the term for "rugby football". The word "football" was interchangeable for these two sports. The decline of the word "soccer" for the sport occurred in the 1980s, as the rest of the world called the sport "football". However, Americans retained its original name to differentiate it from their own version of rugby football – American Football.

  9. Messi makes everyone look silly. Especially everyone in the World Cup.

Also what’s holding back MLS is the league itself. They have strict rules for squad registrations. 3 DPs. TAM GAM. 5.2 million salary cap. Etc etc.

But the league is in talks to change those rules in the winter. Messi did speed up that process tho

  10. Game over. Asia have way more people that like football as culture. Us have to many bullshit sports to become strong whit football

  11. Messi plays fútbol or Football with his FEET, a game played worldwide. Just for clarification its not the lame and boring incorrect named sport where you pass and carry an egg shaped ball with your HANDS named the NFL that's only in the USA and Canada although Canada doesn't count.

  12. Mls is just farmers league. In Europe Messi would be just good. Not any good like past 15 years. But Mls looks like German 3rd league in term of technic among players and Spain 5th in term of Physiclly

  13. Pele failed before him.
They refuse to call it Football and call their hand playing ball "football" how could he succeeds.
