Five years ago, Aston Villa had just lost a Championship play-off final and were facing a winding-up order from HMRC over a £4 million unpaid tax bill.

Since then, Villa have won promotion to the Premier League, they finished seventh and qualified for Europe under Unai Emery last season, and now they’re building upon that with the signings of Moussa Diaby, Pau Torres, and Youri Tielemans.

So in this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at the turnaround at Villa Park, Villa’s ambitious and super rich owners, and whether they could actually disrupt the so-called ‘big six’ long-term.

  1. The way you built it up, I was expecting something absolutely nefarious from BK8. Tits on advertisements are hardly "controversial" 😂

  2. Decent apart from mentioning hawk eye, no need for that but I think you know that 😉
I do like how Gerrard's tenure isn't really mentioned, probably best that way

  3. I've been a Newcastle fan since the 06-07 season, and my resounding memory of Villa was them ruining their bedsheets to put on a Newcastle Relegation party in 09. At the time, there was literally no rivalry between the clubs, geographically or in terms of fighting for the same places in the table. Seemed very odd and the behaviour of a club with very little else to celebrate. The same thing happened in 2015 when they all brought beachballs to interrupt the game in a relegation six-pointer. I'm all one for banter but that all seemed very odd, like we were Birmingham City not some club hundreds of miles up the road. But in general, it's nice to see both teams at the other end of the table now; disrupting the status quo of the 'super league 6'. Matchday 1 promises to be a belter and a very tough game at St James'.

  4. I didn't even consider Unau for the Madrid job until you said but he definitely should be up there with the likes of Xabi and Nagelsmann

  5. Weird how pretty much any video documenting the story of an English club rising from the depths of despair will have an image of Steve Bruce presiding over their darkest days…

  6. As with so many clubs now to cheat FFP rules they no longer own their own stadium is just a cheat. And im a Villa Fan…..runied……ex season ticket holder………

  7. What rise? Aston Villa will play in the conference league. Diaby and Pau Torres went there for the money, both Leverkusen and Villarreal are better clubs, it's a step down for them and an early retirement.

  8. Remarkable rise until they finish mid table this season and their best players move onto champions league clubs. That defensive high line they play will be the undoing of Emery IMO.

  9. Aston Villa are the club that is just there to make up the numbers. They will flop and finish outside the top 10, somewhere in 15 to 17.

  10. Totally unrelated to the content, this comment touches on the commentary. While it is very professionally delivered, it is very "BBC News"-like. In other words, it's too templated, characterless and like chinese water torture listening to after a while. Come on, add a bit of non-BBC personality to your commentary … break from the droll mold. Until such times, I'm either left with turning off the audio and reading the closed captions, or … more than likely, avoiding your videos. Sorry. I've tried to listen, but you may as well have a high-pitch screechy voice. 🙁

  11. Up the mighty VILLA! great analysis of recent years. I have been a fan since they had Guzan and I must say there is something amazing about this club!

  12. Ironic that you used an image of Gareth Barry when talking about Villa's youth programme given that they pinched him from the Brighton youth set-up and had to pay significant compensation.

  13. Hawkeye always lazily mentioned as the reason we stayed up but the last kick of the game goal that was comically wrongfully ruled out away at Crystal Palace never is. That was an actual point lost for us. The hawkeye incident happened in the 1st half – goals change games. Not to mention we should of had two penalties in the hawkeye game. Oh well.

  14. GUESS THEY WERE COOKING UP A 5-1 HAMMERING FROM NEWCASTLE. EMERY IS GOING TO BE THE FIRST MANAGER TO GET THE BOOT.

  15. Newcastle and the big 6 are definitely not nervous of Villa, especially after the humiliating first game of the season. There is no way Villa can break the Top 4. It’s the late 00’s all over again, 6th is the best the can hope for, oh and huge financial losses.
