MOROCCO’S WORLD CUP 2022 SUCCESS – HOW CAN GHANA CAN EMULATE THE ATLAS LIONS COMING 2026?

Morocco’s football dominance at all levels in Africa football and their recent captivating performance at the just ended 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar as the first African team to reach the semi-final is indeed not an overnight success.
Atlas Lions best performing campaign outing at the World Cup was in Mexico 1986, since then they have underperformed at both local and on the international scene until In 2016, Hervé Renard helped Morocco reached the quarter-finals of the AFCON and qualified for the 2018 World Cup – their first in 20 years.
In today’s video we’ll be diving into the success story of Moroccan National team and How can Ghana can emulate the atlas Lions coming 2026.

1. SPORTS INFRUSTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT – Sports infrastructure is one key secret to the development of every footballing nation. The like of Spain, Germany and former champions of the Mundial France has demonstrated how proper sports infrastructure can help develop of talents. Spain wining the World cup in 2010, followed by Germany in Brazil and France in 2018 is obvious indication of the sports investment made by the countries over period of time.

Morocco spent $13 million to build the Mohammed VI Football Academy in 2010 when the kingdom’s soccer scene was in the doldrums, lagging behind African counterparts after having failed to reach the World Cup since 1998.

The academy stretches over 17 hectares and has its own boarding house, restaurant, clinic, entertainment hall, swimming pool and classrooms, as well as nine pitches including a covered one.

The complex has residences (hotel) for national team A (66 rooms and 4 suites), 4 stadiums, 4 locker rooms, special training box drills and sports medicine center.
Again Mohammed VI sports complex was built with the intention to host all Moroccan National teams on all categories as well as other national teams from the continent of Africa. It is indeed an edifice worthy of comparism to Clairefontaine Talent sports academy in France, Paris.

The Mohammed VI football complex owned by the Moroccan Footbal federation is an example of a great investment in football development in Africa. This State of art facility must be a case study to how football should be managed for Africa to compete with its peers in Europe.

2. GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL DEVELOPMENT – Another area that cannot be over looked if talent management and grooming for the next ten years with a particular sporting project is to be achieved.
“Skill has always existed in Morocco, but proper training of talents at a younger age was lacking,” said the academy’s Tarik El Khazri who coached Youssef En-Nesyri, scorer of Morocco’s winning headed goal in their quarter-final defeat of Portugal.
The three other national team players who studied and trained at the academy are Azzedine Ounahi, Nayef Aguerd and Ahmed Reda Tagnaouti. Moroccan clubs Wydad AC and RSB Berkane is on the rise dominating the African football with its clubs winning all three pan-African tournaments this year. Not forgetting the women’s team reached the WAFCON final for the first in ever as the host nation.
All of this success is as result of the Royal Football Federation of Morocco Fouzi Lekjaa making bold decision to improve sports and its facilities in the country.

3. LONG TERM PROJECT (DEVELOPMENT OF LOCAL COACHES AND FOOTBALL IDENTITY – Another key element to any successful footballing project is to have a long term project to develop talent
En-Nesyri,Ounahi, Aguerd and Ahmed Reda are all products of the Academy who represented the National at the World Cup. The former assistant coach Walid who enjoyed so many successes this year with club Wydad AC of morocco chose Five (5) Moroccan nationals out seven (7) as his Technical men for the tournament
Gegen pressing, Tiki-taka and Champaign football are playing styles of former World cup champions. In terms of football style Walid admitted his admiration for Pep Guadiola, Diego Simeone and Ancellotti.
It’s obvious His admiration for these managers indicates and has influenced his playing style if that is what we saw at the World cup.
A bit of possession, direct attacking play and aggressive defensive compactness with a great team spirit.
How would you describe his footballing style or is he on his way of creating something special of his own or not?
