With an average world ranking of 30 and a spread of 48 ranking places between strongest and weakest, Group A seems the weakest.

The Netherlands (8th), should sail through. Senegal (18th) should see off Ecuador (44th). Qatar (50th) has a home advantage – and when players have experience playing in Middle East’s conditions, this could count for a lot.

“I’m confident the players will give their best in all three matches and that we will go through,” Hassan Al-Haydos, Qatar’s captain, told Al Jazeera.

“We will give a performance that will be up to the level of the organisation of this World Cup, and we will make our country proud.”

The star of the Qatar team is left-winger Akram Afif. The 25-year-old was the 2019 Asian Footballer of the Year after his one goal and 10 assists led Qatar to the continental trophy.

Veteran midfielder Abdulaziz Hatem also plays a crucial role in the team.

And you should watch out for Abdelkarim Hassan.

Hassan is a left-sided defender who also played a crucial role in Qatar’s Asian Cup 2019. In 2018, he was recognized with the Asian Footballer of the Year award.

FIFA has described its pick, Orsato, as “one of Europe’s most experienced referees”. He turns 47 on Wednesday.

Until 2016, FIFA had a mandatory age limit of 45 for match officials for international games.
