Eden Hazard was amongst the best players in the Premier League, and by association, the world, at Chelsea. A record transfer took him to Real Madrid. But he could never come close to the form showed at Stamford Bridge.
Why was that? What happened to Eden Hazard at Real Madrid?
Recollected by Seb Stafford-Bloor, illustrated by Craig Silcock.

He was lucky he somehow dodged the Bale treatment
So he's still without a club? I find it hard to believe there isn't a place for him in habibi league
Good insightful work!
Sad very sad for the football world 🥲🥲
He can still play in a championship team, but due to his wage demands no club will come near him
His trajectory reminds me a lot of Kaka. Capable of amazing things in his prime, then shipped off to Madrid when he was most likely past due
*sterling
What happened is that time proved what everyone knew
He was a ridiculously overrated footballer
5:10 why is that Jude Bellingham pose already so iconic? 😆
Hazard was blue-blooded…
Real Madrid are some of the most entitled supporters. The treatment some of their greatest signings is despicable.
Man i loved that Cruyff video you did. This one seems…relegated. Hazard is inconsistent
thats what playing 40k+ career minutes before you're 28 does to you.
I can't get used to the new voice 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Injuries don't care for how much a player is getting paid. And unfortunately some athletes bodies just breakdown. Harry Kewell was flying before he got to Liverpool. Then the injuries started and he never recovered.
As a Real fan, I absolutely hate Hazard. Dude is a pos who came to the club with the thought of retiring.
The real reason why he flopped is him playing false 9 in the 18/19 season. He was no longer the elite winger
It's not talked about how much of a flop eden Hazard really was at Madrid, if he had experienced all of this at a Barcelona or a Manchester United, you'd never hear the end of it
Hazard was one of the best players before joining Real, he has since been released and remains available on a free…no bitters
Insane
As a Belgian I followed the whole story and it seems that plate in his ankle that was mentioned caused repetitive injuries and had to be removed.
Before that, every time he started playing again, trying to get back at his level, he was plagued with injuries
Unfortunately for Hazard, after he removed the plate and had a chance to recover his level, Vinicius exploded and there was no room for him anymore.
I still have to say that in the last World Cup despite the weak performance of Belgium, he was one of those who performed the best.
With his injuries healed, I'm sure he still have football in him.
People really compare KDB to the Belgian Danny Drinkwater.
A pity what happened to Hazard, he was a magic player when fit. He was like the modern Roberto Baggio when he was in the zone.
Come back and retire at Chelsea 🙁
I love Hazard! His time at Madrid is comparable to Drenthe's time…waste of bench space
Pain, everytime.
You see how they trying to make pick matches to justify Hazard but completely thrash Mané.
Hazard was given chances. Mane never was.
It's the same way Kane won't be played on the wing but would rather find ways to make sure he's successful whilst Mane was played as a 9
Must be really hard for him, being a multi millionaire and not having to work.
May be there is something wrong with Real??
Bale actually had massive contributions for Madrid whereas Hazard did nothing. That’s a disgrace if their fans compare them. And then you wonder why the rest of football takes the mick out of their fan base.
Simple really. Hazard is well documented not to put in effort in training and being fouled multiple times at Chelsea started his brutal decline at Madrid. Suffering multiple injuries and barely having an impact on Madrid's success and the rise of Vini Jr made Eden Hazard the worst signing in Real Madrid history. Comparing Hazard to Bale is an insult to Bale.
I prefer the normal TIFO voice talking about things here
Just for entertainment, we should not forget what players go through in terms of physical pain. Salute to Hazard and all football players. They are committed to their work.
He was always overrated, even in his prime. Scored max 16 goals in a season, so don't compare him to Ronaldo or Messi. He had some brilliant moments but played invisible in most games people don't remember
Even at Chelsea Hazard comes back from vacation overweight, still was a beast when the season commences.
He’s a dumb player he should have stayed at Chelsea
Career down the drain 🤦🏾♂️
a lot of these comments still don't get it; Hazard pretty much suffered a career-ending (recurring) injury in that 2019 PSG game. Even though he played after that, he's pretty much been handicapped by that injury. If you've ever suffered an injury and play sports, you sub-consciously try to avoid further injury in the same area. And this results in being unable to play at the desired level or style that you normally could.
What happened? McDonald’s has way too many offers all the time
This is why your parents denied you McDonald's. Because you become Eden Hazard.
Legend says at least three McDonald's locations in Madrid have had to close due to the fall in demand caused by Eden Hazard's departure
Once again where is the guy with the smooth voice 😂😂😂😂😂
A couple of people already mentioned it in the comments, but it's important to understand that Hazard was always overrated.
He liked his mars bar suppers too much.
This is what happens when you're a lazy trainer… it catches up with you
It doesn't matter how good you are, if you don't put in the time on the training ground
His decline was inevitable
He’s a poor trainer and became injury prone
Everyone knows that he was bad at practice and training during the week, relying too much on his natural tecnique and fitness. That kind of mindset is the worse when you suffer an injury as serious as he had, because you need lots of willpower and be disciplined in your recovery.
I think in the back of his mind, he believed that he lost his ability.
With the variety and quantity of injuries he had at Madrid, Chelsea probably had a hunch that he was physically way past it and sold him at the perfect time
This straight up painful to watch as a Chelsea fan.
In a way I am thankful that all those injuries didn't already happen at Chelsea but I really really wanted him to carry Real Madrid to a CL title and win the Ballon D'Or. The two trophies we couldn't give him.
Pretty simple. PL tactics was just to kick him to bits, every game he was bleeding and on the end of abh. PL should of protected him more, he would of got protection if he played for Liverpool. Corrupt af just like more leagues
