Raheem Sterling is often the subject of derisory criticism, especially when he plays for England. Such criticisms often show, among other things, a lack of understanding about just what Sterling’s role is in Gareth Southgate’s team. In fact, Sterling is pivotal and works extraordinarily hard, often at the expense of his own natural instincts, so that other England attacking players can flourish.

  1. I think that most of the criticism of Raheem Sterling is bull. There are racists out there that hate him because of his skin color. I could care less about that or the gun tattoo… It's his body. That said, I believe most people don't like him because he's an arrogant a-hole.

  2. Excellent analysis. And it's true – some people just aren't understanding his role and how well he does it, and can only express their frustration about his lack of goals…two separate points!!

  3. Nobody disputes the talent, Sterling's problem is that for all the goals and assists he does get, he's still a bit of a Heskey in the final third, especially at important moments. Those opening 45 minutes against Spain, THAT is what Raheem Sterling should be.

  4. Raheem Sterling, a role model? Don’t make me laugh – he’s just another overpaid footballer with a daft tattoo. And he has never delivered in an England shirt.

  5. After the World Cup, Sterling has come leaps and bounds. Ending the goal drought – of which he did in spectacular fashion – from scoring against Spain. That was the turning point for him. Especially where his finishing, crossing and assists. Which has become as good as the pace and speed that he has.

  6. For all the idiots who say he's not one of the best England footballers. I think you have a problem. Sterling is hella fast, can pass really good, and can defend the ball, basically most of the stuff you need for a winger except control and maybe the ability to aim for the box. But what he's good at makes him better than the other left wingers (except manè) he does his job so wel and maybe he misses vut everyobe is bad at something. No one can do everything good. If he's bad at something he just need to do some training and with enough of it maybe you guys won't criticise and respect him

  7. I hear you but, considering Kane is pretty much the ONLY player who scores goals for England and that Sterling is basically a #10 in this lineup… 2 for 42? Doesn't look good.

  8. Struggles with England because he lacks passing ability. A right forward has to pass the ball more as opposed to a winger with a midfielder like De Bruyne . Simple. But I guess that’s just racist.

  9. He certainly has speed and draws players away from others….but in possession simply loses the ball too much, fails to make the final pass and has wasted so many good attacking chances England have created. Can't understand why Sancho (who has a much high quality level in all departments, and one of the top midfielders in europe) is not played over him in the England starting lineup
