Ajax chief executive officer Edwin van der Sar speaks exclusively with ESPN FC’s Shaka Hislop about how Ajax hope to build off last season’s Champions League success, despite losing two key players in Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong. Plus, Van der Sar offers insight into De Ligt’s move to Juventus and why it’s too soon to panic as he adapts to life in Serie A.

  1. Ajax is magical. Since the 70's totally obsessed with playing football in a certain way. Attack from every position on the field. Attack to defend. Play with swagger. And not bow to any opponent. Nomatter how expensive their squad. Refusing to bow to laws and trends of modern football.
Always outgunned financially in the industry that professional football also is. Yet they keep popping up as the biggest stunt-club on the international stage.
Many struggles within, never in peace, but this all to serve this obsession, this believe.. In the Dutch league they have tough competition in PSV. But dont forget, the Dutch league is their trainingground. Playing the most ambitious style of football, while yearly their best talents a d players leave..

To call Ajax a small club.. yeah right..

  2. De Ligt just turned 20 and people expected him to perform within 3 months of moving to a new club outside his country? Remember the multiple disasters of Sergio Ramos after he joined Real Madrid aged 19? It took him many years to become an asset rather than a liability to Madrid. Also Chiellini's injury has forced de Ligt into a slightly different position and alongside a different partner (Bonucci rather than Chiellini).

  3. We aren't a small club, tbh I even consider ourselves to be one of the biggest. The only difference between us and Barcelona is a bag of cash.

  4. Please Mr. Hislop, respect Ajax, it is a great club, and the Netherlands are relatively small but one of the greatest countries of football and will always be at top level.
