BJ Callaghan’s USMNT takes on John Herdman’s Canada in the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the knock-out stage where it’s win or go home. The US will rely on guys like Miles Robinson, Matt Turner and Jalen Neal to be rock-solid at the back, while Jesus Ferreira, Cade Cowell and Djordje Mihailovic will need to find a way past a Canadian bunker.

  1. With GGG ball, we should not judge the players to harshly. We have seen are A team on the field and it was as painful.

  2. Sad part is many of these players will still get looks with the A team for no reason other than simply being called into this camp while better players are left in the wings.

  3. Man I really really like Cade Cowell. There is something in him that make me enjoy watching him play. Even if he lacks some technical ability but he has the space and strength to become a very good player

  4. Pete & Tac, you guys make me laugh…

You said that Canada's B team (It's actually their C team, if we use the same reasoning that you use for the U.S. , as they went with a line-up made up of mostly young rookies from the MLS) was terrible because they tied Guadeloupe & Guatemala, ignoring the fact that this young Canadian team, had never played before this tournament & they only had 3 training days together before this tournament versus 6 or 7 for the U S..
Jamaica, who tied the U.S. only edged out Guatemala 1-0. Guadeloupe was actually a better team than Guatemala; but they were intimidated by the huge pro Guatemala crowd.

It's so typical of you guys to assume that the U.S. team is so superior until they inevitably are not. When the U.S. beat Canada 2-0 in the U.S., in the Nations League finals, you gushed about how much better your team was; but when Canada outplayed & beat the U.S. in Canada 2-0, you didn't say that Canada was the better team; but rather, you spoke about how the U.S. didn't live up to expectations.

While the U.S. played well, I also believe that Canada's A team came out flat in that Nation League final & they will definitely perform much better in the next match vs the U.S. As far as I'm concerned, The U.S.& Canadian 'A' teams are pretty well tied since playing against each other in 2020, obviously not counting matches in which the better players did not participate (i.e. Gold cup & the previous Nations League).

Canada should have won this Gold cup match, if it wasn't for a lucky own goal in the final minute by the U.S. & Brym hitting the crossbar in the shoot-out. Plus, Robinson should have been given another penalty for a hand ball in the 1st half that was never called.
You typically don't give Canada credit; but they did a great job of setting up the block & keeping the U.S. to the outside of the box until they played in extra time, when Canada played a bit looser of a game. Once again, you only see it from a superiority stance & that it was all about the U.S. not playing well.

Something that everyone ignores; but it gives the U.S. a huge advantage, is that you always get the homefield advantage, which is a huge boost for any team in all sports. Sadly because FIFA & Concacaf are all about money, all of the tournaments are played in the U.S. Because of your country's location, they know that many of the other countries such as Mexico, Guatemala etc… will pack your stadiums for matches that the U.S. doesn't even participate in.
This constantly gives the U.S. a huge advantage over Canada. The U.S. actually doesn't play well on the road at all.
These tournaments count towards FIFA rankings, yet they are unfair from the beginning.

Sadly Conmebol will also go after the money, as the 2024 Copa América tournament will be held in the U.S., once again, the U.S. go into a tournament with a massive advantage.
The 2021/2022 qualifiers was really the only tournament that was truly fair & played home & away in all of the different countries stadiums.
I am sure that if your favourite football, baseball, or hockey teams had to play all of their playoff games in the opponent's stadiums, that you absolutely would not think that it would be a fair playing field at all; but somehow you never even mention it in these tournaments.

Since there will not be any more qualifiers until about 2029/2030, Canada can expect to be playing uphill and in an unfair situation until then, with the exception of some of the 2026 World cup matches, however you can bet that all of the playoffs will most likely be played in the U.S…
But hey, let's close our eyes & not talk about it & pretend that all of the countries are playing on an even playing field… It's a ridiculous situation that FIFA should do something about, to at least try to improve this situation; but of course they never will, when it means that they can line their pockets with more money.

  5. A couple observations:
1 Canada played Zendejas perfectly to take him out of the game. When he drove to the line, they cut off his crosses which forced him to turn around and try to use his right foot, which he showed he couldn't really do.
2 Mihailovich was by far the biggest disappointment. His inability to create through the middle was what led to us having to put in crosses to Ferreira.

  6. Busio's play was one of the highlights for the US. He was very active, connecting things, and his service into the box was right there all night. Cowell was his usual bull-in-the-china-shop and was unlucky not to score.

  7. We've gotta keep calling them Kings of Concacaf for the next few years. The joke will need to be really old before we stop.
