How about an ageing footballer, a very good player, but one who will struggle for game time this season, taking advantage of a life-changing opportunity to set his family up for life , with a ridiculous pay packet for 2 or 3 years. Not forgetting , that he is hardly the only player doing this , the vast majority of whom would not agree with that country’s stance on homosexuality, but whose motives have not been questioned. There are compromises in everything, and moving club, moving to foreign country away from family and friends, to a country which is as alien as it gets for a European player. Another compromise is accepting their lifestyle and laws. Jordan Henderson has expressed support for LGBT issues, but he’s just a footballer, a working class man offered money , which to most , would be financially irresponsible to turn down. Pro footballers are very well paid, but that life , for most , is over in their mid thirties. If I were Henderson I would go. Not forgetting that in England homosexuality was illegal even after World War 2. Alan Turing, the brilliant mathematician, responsible for cracking the German Enigma code machine during the war, thereby ending the war quicker and saving thousands of lives was arrested in the early 1950’s for homosexuality , and offered a choice of jail or chemical castration, which he eventually chose. He committed suicide subsequently. Not the same as the death sentence in the Middle East, but an indication of the relatively recent change of attitude towards this subject in Britain. It’s their law, not for outsiders to question. The next World Cup is in the U.S , I wonder which accepted social norm in that country are we going to get outraged with, I’m sure somebody will find something. Then we can attack those players who have the temerity to have a different opinion.
