The Qatar World Cup has provoked strong and sometimes conflicting, reactions in many people.

In this series of videos, written by James Montague and illustrated by Alice Devine, Tifo explains why the World Cup in the Gulf State is so controversial.

The contest in Qatar is beset by controversy and human rights concerns, most notably the reported deaths of migrant workers. A staggering 90% of the population of Qatar are migrant workers. Why is this number so high?

In order for Qatar to host this tournament they’ve had to build stadia, build infrastructure, build a team, and build a reputation.

  1. It seems like the biggest mercenary org in the world is not responsible for wars or famines but for organizing sports tournaments and touting their influence on geopolitics for the highest bids

  2. Excellent series overall. At 17:45 the narrator says "Kafala Stadium" instead of "Khalifa Stadium", which some would say isn't exactly inaccurate, but is not the correct name of the venue 😉

  3. Absolutely tifos best work to date. What a fantastic series delivered through the most objective lens possible especially given the subject. Well done

  4. In Qatar, government projects are awarded to big contractors – mostly managed by foreigners. They hire workers from overseas through agencies in south East Asian countries. The agency takes fees from the companies/contractors. As a result Contractors expect the workers to not work elsewhere once the workers arrive in Qatar.
The government cannot control every single recruitment happening in the private sector – which is run by foreigners themselves.
For decades, workers have been coming to Qatar from south east Asia willingly (nobody forces them on planes). The workers know that conditions in their countries (and in Europe) are worse than in Qatar.
If the Europeans are sincere about those south East Asians, then they should hire them in Europe.

  5. Wow! Great Job these Episodes should teach in classrooms and history classes and political 👏 👍.. it shows how thirty the world is, how it works.. again Thanks

  6. I enjoyed this series very much. Thank you for the well produced product. I have a few questions: 1) it was only glossed over in this episode: how did President Biden get the other Arab countries to stop their blockade of Qatar? And 2) is there any relation to the development of football in the Arab world and the way the Saudi Arabian league was able to pull in Cristiano Ronaldo? Of course I knew Saudi Arabia had a league, but the level of exposure they will garner from him signing will be larger than anything they have experienced up to this point.

  7. You blame the immigrant worker system on1 British diplomat in Bahrain? The other countries in the region we are not required to adapt that system.
