Not City or PSG, but Arsenal’s squad is the most expensive
A team has not qualified for the Champions League in the last seven seasons. Not that the English Premier League won the title last season. The title was won by those who were supposed to win it—Manchester City.
Last season’s ‘treble’ winner was almost beaten by the same team earlier this month. They were the second team in world football to cost their squad over a billion euros. This time it went to the top. The price of that team’s squad is now the highest, overtaking Manchester City. Oh, not to mention the team’s name is Arsenal.
Transfermarket, a reliable website dealing with transfers, player and club finances, made the calculations. According to their calculations, Arsenal’s squad is now the most expensive in the world. In this way, the Gunners have overtaken Manchester City, who have held the throne of the most expensive squad for several seasons. Arsenal’s current squad is worth 121 million euros. City, who won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League last season, has dropped to two with a squad worth 119 million euros.
After losing the league title to City, Arsenal have poured money into this season’s transfer window. Arsenal signed defensive midfielder Declan Rice from West Ham United for £100m on 15 July. In addition, Kai Havertz was flown from Chelsea last month for 6.5 million pounds.
The Gunners have also strengthened their squad with the signing of Urien Timber from Ajax for £3.4 million. Arsenal spent a total of 23.16 million pounds on these three players in terms of Euros. It has also increased costs, and so City have fallen behind in terms of squad prices.
According to transfermarket, after Mikel Arteta took over as Arsenal coach in 2019, the price of the squad dropped from 668 million euros to 121 million euros. That is, this time the price of Arsenal’s squad has increased by 528 million euros. During this time, no other club’s squad price has increased so much.
Arsenal spent a total of €68.5 million on players to strengthen the squad during Arteta’s tenure. And the player got 10 million 40 million euros. Deducting income from these expenses gives Arsenal’s net cost – 581 million euros. No other club has spent as much net as Arsenal since January 2020, not even Chelsea (56.3 million euros), according to TransferMarket.
