New Spurs signing Jan Vertonghen helped Ajax end a seven-year wait for the Dutch title in 2011, and by the time they retained it a season later Vertonghen was club captain. He celebrated by dropping the trophy on his own foot.
Those league titles and one Dutch Cup remain Vertonghen’s career highlights, and he was named Eredivisie player of the year last season. He’s been an established international for Belgium for five years, and appeared in their 2008 Olympic campaign.
A left-footed centre half, a defensive midfielder, or a left back… they’re all Jan Vertonghen. That versatility is one of the reasons he’s caught the eye in recent seasons. For Belgium, he’s now settled in midfield, for Ajax he’s at the back. But wherever he plays, he’s powerful, good in the air and a regular goal scorer.
At the age of 25, Jan Vertonghen is ready for the bigger stage. He was linked with Manchester City a year ago, and with Tottenham for most of last season. Finally that deal has come off, and he’s set to become an important part of AVB’s new era. Eden Hazard may not be the only top Belgian export to hit the Premier League this season.

Best player of the eredivisie, he always joins the attack and is back at the defence when they lost possesion. He scored every corner that he should have scored and not only is an amazing captain he is also really fun when he is nog on the field. Ajax posted a lot of videos on their YouTube where they follow Jan for a day and it is really funny. I think he will be next to Vidic and Pique in 2 years

He isn't a good defender. He's a good build-up player. I think Tottenham will be dissapointed with his defending qualities. In the Dutch Eredivisie he's got easy strikers to defend. He always failed in the CL or the Europa League. They should use him as a midfielder. He played there also for a long time.
Je moet niet denken dat hij in Engeland zal kunnen opkomen zoals bij Ajax. Daar zal hij z'n handen al vol hebben aan het verdedigen. Iets wat hij niet kan. Ik denk terug aan wedstrijden waarin hij weggezet werd als een klein jongetje in EL/CL wedstrijden.
You shouldn't be thinking that he will be attacking in Engeland. He wil have his hands full with defending. He isn't that good of a defender. A good footballer, but not a pure defender.
He actually is a really good defender aswell as a build-up player.
