Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has emerged as a potential target for Manchester United. The 25-year-old has fallen out of favor under Roberto de Zerbi, who has chosen Jason Steele as his number one, and it’s likely that Sanchez will further slide down the pecking order following Monday’s confirmation of their signing Bart Verbruggen from Anderlecht for £16.3 million.

Sanchez has been one of the most consistent performers in the Premier League, is a good passer of the ball – which Erik ten Hag desires – and kept a clean sheet against United for 120 minutes in their FA Cup semi-final.

Although born in Spain and an international player for Spain, Sanchez has an English father and has been in Brighton’s academy since he was 15, so he’s considered a homegrown player. Brighton would be looking for around £30 million for the goalkeeper as United and other Premier League clubs begin to show interest.

United have been intent on signing Andre Onana from Inter Milan, who worked with ten Hag at Ajax, but his £50 million price tag means they are seeking cheaper alternatives so they can allocate more of their initial budget towards signing a striker. Feyenoord’s Justin Bijlow is one option they are well aware of, as is Kevin Trapp at Frankfurt, but the team has other names on their list in a similar price range.

One advantage for Sanchez is his Premier League experience. Ten Hag ideally wants the new signings in place by next week, but budget restrictions have hindered United’s progress, not to mention their takeover saga.

Mason Mount completed his medical on Tuesday ahead of joining United from Chelsea for £55 million, but the club wants to resolve the situation regarding the striker and goalkeeper as soon as possible before focusing on sales and other signings.
