In this episode of Locked on Hornets, our hosts give a detailed analysis of Brandon Miller’s performance in the Summer League and delve into the brewing drama surrounding the coaching staff. They discuss whether Miller’s seven assists against the Golden State are indicative of his playmaking ability, or if they are the result of a potentially disorganized coaching staff not being able to find him shots. They also bring in some saucy gossip from the True Hoop Podcast, which has an unnamed player spilling the tea on drama between head coach Marlon Garnett and his assistants.

Later on in the episode, our hosts explore the recent struggles of both Kai Jones and James Bouknight. They discuss the disappointing lack of progress shown by Jones and question whether Bouknight can make the most of the remaining Summer League games. The conversation wraps up with a preview of the highly anticipated Summer League game between the Charlotte Hornets and the San Antonio Spurs, where Brandon Miller will face off against number one pick Victor Wembanyama.

  1. Hey guys. Great show. Well laid out. Interesting about the coaching history there.

This reminds me of 2007, when Portland picked Greg, Oden and Seattle at number two picked Kevin Durant. While Oden played, there was always comparisons here in Oregon about “who Portland should’ve drafted. Was Oden the right selection?”

I think for Charlotte fans, the comparison will always be with Scoot. Should they have taken him instead?

In the end, though, I do hope, both players have exceptional careers and both fan bases find great times, and enjoyable basketball with each player being on their roster.

Both Miller and Henderson are players that neither Charlotte nor Portland could ever “trade for.” you get better through the draft in the smaller markets.

I really hope it works out great for both cities.

  2. "Summer League" for every other NBA coaching team…let's experiment and try to get the most of each young player…try to get them into the main team routines, philosophy, etc.

"Summer League" for Hornets… “Is it hot in here or is it just me?” – "Wazzuuuuuuuuuuup"

*any similarity to reality purely coincidental

  3. Swarm are horribly coached by Jordan Surenkamp (probably misspelled). Hornets last two summer league sucked as well und Surenkamp. This new guy is worst. Hornets needs to stop being cheap and get some real assistant coaches with playing experience in the NBA (former players). It’s embarrassing to watch.

  4. Even fans can tell c'mon now it's not like we just jump in 😂 . Back room is pretty bad. Coaching staff should help boost the confidence of these guys.

  5. I’d like to see a horns set maybe a Spain PNR tonight. Something other than a standard PNR or dribble hand off

  6. Brandon Miller is playing the 4 position, power forward, no point guards to distribute the ball, no spacing

How can you succeed with idiot coaching staff and game planning

  7. It’s actually really a shit situation, and it’s unfortunate for these guys who are fighting for a spot on the team, but since the coaching staff isn’t prepared, your number 2 pick is getting 6 points and 7+ fouls each game, while the warriors first round pick is looking like the next Steph curry….it’s all about the organizations readiness, and why charlotte wasn’t prepared for summer league when they had the number 2 pick? I wish I could say….but they didn’t deserve to be in the California classic on ESPN in front of all of these people….embarrassing

  8. I tried to tell you guys before. This is why ken backed out the job cause he could not hire his own coaching staff to help install his system/culture. Now clifford has those same assistant coaches that should be fired and this situation doesn't help instill confidence in players. The whole front office needs to be fired. These drafted players are coming in to a situation that is full is dysfunction and confusion after leaving well coached colleges. The organization philosophy and culture is what is letting down players and harming their growth and fans don't want to hear the criticism when some random person mentions it cause they think they are just hating. Be a fan not a stan of your team. It's ok to be critical.

  9. Kia Jones is not a 5 he’s a PF stop asking him to rebound you have mark Williams and big guards and to rebound let him be a miles bridges type of player he’s taller and just as athletic

  10. Kai showed a little hustle last game. How in the hell has he not gotten jacked over the last couple years. Looks like has hasn’t gained any weight. Coaching is horrible, Bouk is donzo, Kai is most likely donzo.

  11. Makes no sense for Kai to be so ineffective as a rebounder. Bouk just needs to focus on facilitating if he can, his shot selection is terrible. Let’s just hope Miller can get some help from his team

  12. I would like to see Kai escape the prison of bad decisions that is the hornets and actually get a chance to develop and succeed as a solid roleplayer somewhere.

  13. Kai Jones: if he was being properly coached, they'd work on his hands and positioning. He always trying to 1 hand rebound and end up wiffing. And he doesn't position well when going for boards. Coaching could fix these problems. He goes hard, but often in the wrong spot.

Bouknight: he's steadily gotten worse. Not sure if coaching or he's just bad, but he's not progressed at all since getting to CLT, and actually looking worse..

Mcgowens: much the same as bouknight. If it's one guy, I'd lean towards it being the guy, but multiple guys, gotta start looking at who's leading them..

Miller so far: looking at the guys on the floor with him, I'm still comfortable with his 2nd pick status. He's open from 3 a lot even tho no one is looking to pass on offense other than him. He finds open guys for better shots a good bit but can still work on his passing. His handle skills are good enough for what he'll be doing in a starting role with starting caliber players, which will be catch n shoot. His defense hasn't been bad, but he could show more effort in the paint. Gets some steals but he's left a few blocks on the floor maybe because of foul troubles. Decent coaching could help but watching these games, it's like a pickup game with no coach (clt) vs real teams with real coaches with game plans installed.

My verdict: CLT coaches aren't doing their job. It's hard to blame any of the players when there's ZERO visible direction on the floor. It's like they said "if you get the ball, go score at all cost, and don't worry about rebounding or defense". Bouk and mcgowens 6-22, 2 assists between them in game 2. Game 3, not much better. Add in that kupchak is ok not bringing anyone new in from free agency, not finding real coaches, i feel like it's going to be a long season…
