Always makes me cringe when I hear an Aussie explain to a Yank that Rugby League is “like your football, but without the pads”. It just comes off as so douche-y. It’s like we’re worried that an American will see it and think “No pads, huh? Must be a sissy game. And all the men here must be soft as well, and have small penises. Probably why they can play in such short shorts.”
Never heard anyone say it’s “like American football, but without the forward pass”, or “…without thirty-seven referees on the field”. Never heard it explained as “Like gridiron, except you can finish a game in less time that it takes to play a Test match” despite that being another very obvious difference between the two. It’s always the with the pads.
