Roberto Martinez was the first Spaniard to score a goal in The FA Cup when he netted for Wigan Athletic against Runcorn in 1995 and he’s now preparing to take the same club into their first ever Final.

The Latics manager arrived in England as part of the ‘Three Amigos’ with compatriots Isidro Diaz and Jesus Seba in 1995 and his strike against Runcorn was the start of his own history in The Cup.

And he’s now hoping to write more history as he takes Wigan to Wembley with the hope of upsetting Manchester City in The Final next weekend.

Speaking to FATV about his scoring milestone in The FA Cup, Martinez said: “It’s something that I will enjoy telling my grandchildren.

“But at the moment, it’s just a nice memory.

“You fall in love with this competition and there’s no other Cup competition around the world which develops that feeling.”

The Semi-Final match against Millwall last month was the furthest Wigan had ever been in the competition in their history, so Saturday’s game is another massive occasion for the Lancashire club.

But Martinez is hoping they will be celebrating again on Saturday evening if they can upset Roberto Mancini’s side.

He added: “Being in The FA Cup Final is a tremendous achivement.

“But you don’t have a good memory of a Final unless you win and that’s the reality of it.

“We already celebrated getting into The Final and a place in the Europa League.

“Now, we can only celebrate if we get a positive result.”

  1. My Dad is a retired first class ref (and Wigan season ticket holder) and berated Marriner in previous games were he was lamentable but at the end I turned to him and said, "what do you think of Marriner now?". He said, "he is still rubbish!". I was listening to Talksport's coverage as I watched and you could hear the joy in the commentators' voices. The FA cup is about will against money, fortitude against complacency. What Wigan Athletic have done can never be taken away. Ever.
