  1. The odd FA cup and finishing no higher than 6th, that's it for United from now on. The ride is well and truly over. Not just titles, even hubris is disappearing from the club.

  2. 1 is his fault
2 he could have done nothing about
3 means nothing and there isn't anything wrong with it
4 wasn't his fault, it's the owner if the club's job to buy players
    5 is his fault

  3. Lol, Manchester players complained about being ‘crucified’ by Van Gaal. When he gives a clinic to amateur players or 6-year olds he also ‘crucifies’ them and they don’t complain about it either. It’s their job and they get paid 1+ millions for it.

  4. after he criticised Smalling he had an amazing 12 months or so.
the main reason was terrible football and bad tactics

  5. I think there are definite positives to take from his spell in charge. I think the team José inherited obviously lacked expression and confidence in attack but were more often than not defensively well drilled, disciplined and organised (mind you it is easier to defend with lots of players behind the ball, Smalling probably played his best football under him as he was protected by deep midfielders more often).

José has praised the professionalism and determination of his squad a lot this season. I like to believe that LvG had a hand in instilling big game mentality back into a fragile Moyes team. Antonio Valencia has been excellent since he started playing more regularly at right back over the last few seasons, I'd be shocked if he didn't have praise for LvG I terms of learning defensive solidarity in a novel position. In fact, there was many players playing in unfamiliar positions and while immediate results may have been a consequence, I think our squad came out 'smarter' – note his continued emphasis on players managing the games on the pitch and solving problems themselves with, while he sat in the dugout with his notepad.

It would have been a much more difficult job for José had he succeeded moyes rather than LvG. People often use the phrase "steady the ship" when an experienced coach comes into a declining team and I think it applies. Looking back on his time in charge, nobody could endorse the football we played as it was far and away from the United way but I tried to remain realistic as there are/were more competitive teams challenging than ever before, so looking at the big picture patience was needed. I think the days of domestic dominance from 1/2 teams for prolonged periods is gone, clubs will fluctuate, even with big investment.

I honestly think he was good for the club but I am very happy with Mourinho at the moment, a few more first team signings and I think we can compete with the best. Oh and LvG won an FA cup, fair play to him, and his press conferences were fantastic!

  6. The best thing about him was showing how good Rashford and Martial are.Let's be honest if Jose was in charge would he ever gave a chance to Rashy or buy Martial who is premier league unproven at this point? And he finished 5th at his second season On Goal Diffrence,so yeah he wasn't that bad.No where near Moyes

  7. Van gaal is under appreciated, he is one of the best in finding young talents and improving their performance. He needed at least 3 years to build his team full of young strong players with legend potential.

  8. Better than Moyes by far.
He signings weren't good at all and his football was slow but he did win FA Cup he had good record against top.teams bit getting knocked out in groups stages of CL isn't good

  9. Number 5: the playing of 4231 and struggling against low blocks. Number 2: losing attacking players and not replacing them. Number 1: no champions league because of not getting top four.

Years later the same issue are reoccurring under ole, not all his fault but just shows how things haven’t changed

  10. Anyone saying it was unfair he got the sack, do you not remember the 2014/15 season? It was the most tedious and boring football I’d seen any team play.

  11. I dont think di maria and some criticzing was the reason, these are not valid reasons to be honest, they fired him because they wanted instant results and that was imposible 🤷‍♂️

  12. His downfall was his bad judgement of players..he let players like chicarito welbeck van persie Evans kagawa leave and replaced them with average players who never suited to PL

  13. Sold RVP. …why on earth?
Bought Blind. Don’t get that one.
Rojo, I like him actually, but gave him a massive contract regardless of performance, and he’s not good enough. A leg breaker.
Refused to allow service to strikers.they never got the ball. DM, Falcoe,
With no true wingers, send the ball up the wing., back to defence, then up the other wing. Repeat the entire game. Every game. Repeatedly
I have my philosophy, buy expensive quality strikers then don’t give them the ball. Your at Utd buddy. Wakey wakey.

Giggs was shocked. You could see it on the bench. I can’t help but wonder if other teams were paying LVG to run Utd down. Sell all their strikers. Buy low standard players or old has beens, put them on massive contracts, then play a system that excludes the strikers. No idea what he was doing, andi don’t think he did either. Never seen anything like it.

  14. It’s easy in retrospect, but Utd needed to plan for The next Fergy 5 years prior. Say Giggs under Ferguson, or whoever, and have Fergy gradually stand back. Maybe a group of candidates. Oly Giggs Butt etc, make a management team out of them. Ignoring the fact Giggs was still playing of course. 😀

  15. It's easy to sum up now in retrospect of the fact these years later but the main points are ( I won't be talking about transfer business because that's down to woodwood and glazers but he made some questionable decisions in that respect as well most notable in first season choosing Rojo over De Vrij)
1.Absolute rancid start that didn't bring him the goodwill and momentum good starts do bring won 1 of his first 6 games in charge
    2. When he did steady the ship and we went on a epic fantastic run he decided to play a subpar and weak squad in a home quarter against arsenal losing his only chance of a trophy in his first season
    3. Ending that first season by crawling over the line to 4th when we really had a chance to get into 2nd (1 win in last 6)
    4. In second season we went modern club record of 8 games in all competitions without a win in that time lost at home to Southampton and worst of all Norwich which resulted in united failing to qualify a champions league group that was extremely favorable
    5. Being tore apart by a preety poor Liverpool team in Europa league considering it was a team he had a good record against made it all the more unforgivable
    6. General coldness towards fans legends of the club other then giggs and lack of knowledge of the club culture and expectations he was not present at either Munich anniversary memorials in his tenure

LVG wasn't a total disaster this isnt me completely "disrespecting" him its me pointing out the flaws most people look too much at the positives of his reign and not the stuff which made him go

  16. “My problem at Manchester was the coach. Van Gaal was the worst of my career. I would score, assist, and the next day he would show me my misplaced passes. He displaced me from one day to the other, he didn't like players being more than him.” Di Maria.

  17. I think a big reason for his failure was because he didn't have good enough defenders, because in his first few matches he would try to attack but we conceded lots of goals. The 5-3 against Leicester was a big turning point because he realized he had to play more defensive to protect the back four. It's no coincidence that Mourinho immediately signed Bailey in his first season, then Lindelof in his second season, and was desperate for another center back in his third season.
