USMNT defeats Canada, wins second-straight Nations League title
According to a report from The Times, Josko Gvardiol is at the top of Pep Guardiola’s wish-list this summer. The Croatian defender, 21, is thought to be valued at $108 million by RB Leipzig and although the German giants don’t want to sell, it is believed Gvardiol is keen on a move to City. The report says that City plan on moving on at least one of their center backs and all of John Stones, Ruben Dias, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake seem certain to stay with Aymeric Laporte perhaps the most likely to move on. Gvardiol has long been linked with a Premier League move and his power in the air as well as his pace and ability on the ball is a perfect fit for the Premier League and City. Josko Gvardiol also got a good look at City this season as Leipzig were hammered by Erling Haaland and Co. in the UEFA Champions League. We’ve seen this season how Guardiola’s side dominated the final months of the season not only due to their incredible goalscoring exploits but largely thanks to a solid defensive unit. Having mobile center backs who can slot in at full back and step into midfield is key to the way they play. Gvardiol can do that. (JPW)
U.S. beats Canada to win Nations League as Balogun opens account
The U.S. was without Sergino Dest and Weston McKennie, both of whom were out for the match after picking up red cards in a fiery semifinal win over Mexico on Thursday. Interim coach B.J. Callaghan, still overseeing the team after Gregg Berhalter was rehired Friday, started Joe Scally and Brenden Aaronson in place of his two suspended players.
USMNT win their third Concacaf trophy in a row, cementing regional dominance ahead of 2026 World Cup
For the past few years, this improvement has been happening gradually, albeit with a major fly in the ointment. The general consensus has been that the USMNT was a good team but they would need to find a true striker somewhere to be a great team. Now they not only have one. Folarin Balogun opened his account with the USMNT in the first half, doubling the team’s lead on a sweet feed from Reyna. The striker who scored 21 goals in Ligue 1 last year, and then committed his future to the U.S. is head and shoulder above any option the U.S. have had. But that’s not all! Ricardo Pepi, the young American striker who narrowly missed out on the World Cup roster scored in the team’s semifinal romp against Mexico. If Pepi can continue his development — especially with a possible move to PSV in the Eredivisie — then the USMNT could actually have depth leading the line. Ahead of the 2024 Copa America and the 2026 World Cup, this team is only getting better and is operating themselves from the rest of Concacaf.
USMNT Player Ratings: Gio Reyna dismantles Canada in Nations League final
The only thing holding Reyna back from a higher score was the calf injury that caused him to be pulled at halftime. Other than that, it was pretty much a perfect match from the Borrusia Dortmund playmaker. The quality is always there, and showed through on his two assists, but arguably more inspiring was his defensive buy-in, starting the second goal sequence with a smart defensive header to break up Canada’s build-up play.
With Gio Reyna pulling strings, USMNT bests Canada for CONCACAF Nations League title
From there, Reyna began feeling himself. He’d spent much of Thursday’s win over Mexico feeling his way into the game, but not anymore. Now he was in rhythm, thinking a step ahead of his 21 peers. He made passes because he’d already seen the subsequent pass. He drifted in and out of spaces, from midfield out to the left touchline, then back inside to the right. He floated with a freedom that Berhalter rarely afforded him.
