When Harry Maguire powered in that header against Sweden in the World Cup 2018 a new English cult hero was born. Following another solid season with Leicester City Maguire became most expensive centre-back in the history of British football by moving to Manchester United.
Four years later, Maguire is no longer an automatic starter at the club and is the subject of frequent social media mockery. So, what happened?

add to that the england squad played a back three, maguire enjoyed the presence of his other 2 center back partner to cover for his own weakness, while at manchester united he was only paired with 1 center back, hence his responsibilities are much higher and he can get overwhelmed more easily
If you want to press high, use the high line, leave your center backs alone with 30 meters behind then, Maguire simply cannot do it, he doesn't have the pace. Not a bad player, simply doesn't fit big team football.
He's a good player, but he isn't the all around defender that his price tag warrants. He isn't set up well enough at United to take advantage of his strength, instead, he is set up in a way that will just highlight his flaws. It makes sense that he was solid at first, but as soon as teams started to figure them out more, he crumbled. For England, he has everything going for his advantage. He has been able to play in a 3 at the back under Southgate for much of the time, or he is at least always next to Stones. That partnership works well for him because Maguire doesn't have to be the guy to pass between the lines to break the midfield because Stones is much much better at that. Even the threat of Stones breaking the midfield with a pass should warrant opposition teams to have more players blocking his channels, which only gives more space for Maguire to carry the ball. Southgate is also very comfortable sitting back and playing Harry Kane hold up ball and winning set pieces which also is great for Maguire.
He's still good, he just has balls and makes tackles. You don't win every tackle, but he is one of the few that has bravery to put himself out there and do it. Every other club's CBs are back up merchants who can pass, that's the way the game is now. Shout out to the few CBs that still live the real life.
One thing you've gotta respect is that Maguire's always available for selection, which is more than can be said for many other Utd players

Maguire has never been good enough. He was just hyped and he has never made an attempt to live up to the hype, instead he just believed that he is as good as people say he is.
For comparison, Rashford is also overhyped, but many can argue on his behalf based on the effort he has put in improving has game under ETH while Maguire says 'I have nothing to prove'…that alone should tell you he is a loser
If it was up to me, id pay him to leave the club cos his presence alone is detrimental to the development of younger players…imagine Garnacho saying he has nothing to prove in a years time…

His style of play does not suit the current style of play that EtH wants to implement. Also he should not have been given the captain armband which may have had a negative effect on him due to the pressure.

I still think he's a really good player, but you get a lot of slack for saying that when he looks like a donkey without kneecaps week in, week out. He's been fantastic for England, he just needs a style of play and position that he can fit into.
I'm not saying he's anything particularly special, but we all understand players need proper coaching and the right role to be at their best, so how is it crazy to point out that's also true for Maguire?

The fact of the matter is he turns like a bus and has zero recovery pace. He’s simply not good enough to play in any sort of high line. He’s also ponderous on the ball. If he wasn’t English you wouldn’t even care..
How many excuses does Maguire get? So much wankery in this video I can’t believe my eyes. His positioning is consistently poor, he is error prone, he is slow, and never takes responsibility for his mistakes. This is the club captain we’re talking about! His comments in the media about his ability and staggering arrogance has only made him look like an even bigger bellend. He performs better for England because he routinely plays against subpar teams like San Marino. Maguire is not good enough to play at the top level of English football.

Kind of feel bad for Maguire, he's always going to be a stand out player in a low possession team who spend most of the time pinned in their own half but an obvious weakness in a strong team who plays high. If hes going to play in a top team it needs to be a counter attacking style where his passing ability is utilized and there is no expectation for him to be playing a high line. Should be mentioned that when he joined, Man Utd were a purely counter attacking team under Ole.

He has very bad awareness for where the opposition players are. He simply does not scan. In a team that's pressing high and building from the back, that's a very bad trait.
I think he's still a decent defender but no longer fits the way Man Utd play.
