Hello, and welcome back to Football By The Numbers!

In this week’s clip, we return to a clip from our USMNT November roster review in which John discussed why Josh Sargent shouldn’t be called up again to the USMNT. What do you think? Should Josh Sargent get another chance before 2022?

  1. I did not want to be the first to say this. But Josh Sargent could and would make a very good center back for some professional football club some day. And I mean that in a good way.

  2. I'm not high on Sargent but the striker pool for US is pretty weak. We still don't really know if guys like Dike, Pepi and Ferreira would be doing any better in a top 4 league. I hope they move and can translate their game to a higher level, but its yet to be seen. We've seen many examples where guys weren't able to.

  3. I doubt this camp will result in the discovery of much needed backups for the #5, #6 and #9 positions.
My read is that Gomez will go with mexico, he's really friendly with Rafa Marquez, wouldnt surprised me if Rafa somehow hooked Gomez with Real Sociedad. The #5 backup will be between Scally and Bello.

I'm hoping that Cardoso has a good showing and challenges Acosta at #6. Justin Che could be converted to a #6, the boy is super athletic, can dribble, and a pit bull defending, though it might be too late for Qatar.

I dont see Ferreira or Zardes locking in the #9 backup role. It'll come down to Hoppe or Dike.

  4. Outstanding Analysis!… but i still disagree with you. He's a striker; he's supposed to receive key passes – Not make them. He def needs to be more aggressive and learn to be better position himself in the box as well as being better in the air. But the fact is that Norwich SUUUUCKS! Werder Bremen SUUUUCKS!!!!… I watched Werder Bremen's miracle games to stay in Bundlisliga the year before, and they only had two guys that seemed like professional players: Raschika and Sargent. Sargent was without a doubt one of two guys who did the most to keep Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga. The problem I see is that his growth as a striker is thwarted because he's forced to play every position – except striker. Norwich and Werder Bremen have pathetic midfield incapable of holdup or buildup. I still think he's still in our top 3 striker rotation behind Pepi and Dike… with that said: More numbers please!😁

  5. So what do the numbers say about forwards passing the ball in general? Are they usually passing it forward when they’re the farthest forward on the pitch? Does anyone from Norwich touch the ball in box?

  6. I mean I just disagree tbh. Dudes 21 and playing in top 5 leagues. He hasn't been successful but also hasn't been a failure. Harry Kane had 7 goals in his second season in the PL when he was 20. Josh Sargent had 5 goals for Verder Bremen when he was 20 in his second season. In a larger perspective, Josh Sargent could still be come a successful striker. I would not just write him off when we are in desperate need of more successful strikers, specifically in the top 5 leagues…. I mean there is a reason why Dike still hasn't made it to a top 5 league. He's Physical but his touch still needs DRASTIC improvement. Gotta disagree with this take here.

  7. Lazy, incomplete, and inaccurate. These are how I would describe yous 2 guys and your bad podcast; not Sargent. Mr. “I get upset if I don’t score every game”; I’m guessing your playing in a coed rec. league.
