All Black #773 Colin Farrell, widely regarded as possibly the most hapless All Black of all time. Selected on recommendation of Bryan Williams, the 21 year old full back played 2 tests against the British & Irish Lions in 1977 which involved a load of fumbling (one of which errors led to a try) and a dozen kicks coming off his shin.

It genuinely looked like the All Blacks had just given the shirt to a lucky fan on a day they were one short. Even the official All Blacks website notes he “made a host of errors” and was “out of his depth”.

  1. Public enemy No 1 in 1977. Which is a pretty sad indictment on NZ in the 70s. Watched all of these games o. DVD a few years back and none of fit was as bad as made out at the time (including the 3 man scrums – the Lions forwards were better but not hugely). Obvs Farrell didn’t shine. But basically it was seen as anti NZ behaviour not to take catches on the full and kick 50m for touch. Think there was a lot of hate for a young Aucklander coming from nowhere into the Test side. Had a good career with Auckland after. Apparenlty Couldn’t go out anywhere for ages as he’d be lined up by dickheads. There was an article about him in the paper not so long ago and he wasn’t bitter at about it ( most would be).

  2. Pretty crap conditions. I don't remember him being bad as a kid so he must have been ok. I remember others more so who I didn't think we're too great.

  3. Was selected for the All Blacks when was past his prime. An honest provincial player whose introduction to international rugby coincided with an injury depleted team. Bryan Williams indicated it was very unfair to him to be selected with little time to prepare for the jump to that next level of rugby.

  4. He got picked for a reason. I watched Richie Mo'unga successfully kick a goal in front of 58,000 people while a giant screen behind the goalposts showed a close up of his face staring back at him while he lined up the kick. Playing under that pressure takes a special kind of mental skill. If anyone hasnt fumbled or crumbled under pressure they havent been living their best life. Collin Farrell was a All Black.

  5. I haven't read any comments, but you should pull this vid down. What a shitty thing to post. Not in the spirit of the game we love. Posting trolling crap like this isn't very sportsman-like!

  6. If you select 1 min of mistakes and ignore the rest of a career, then they're all bad.
Alan Hewson was also pretty dodgy at times, but he also won games.
I wonder how many could take those high balls, in the wind, mud etc, with those old balls being like heavy soap and a large forward pack running at you?
    Not to many.

  7. This video should be taken down off YouTube. It’s wrong to publicly display a video denigrating someone who is playing a sport for their country. The man is doing something special and positive for himself and his country. Rant over just my opinion.
