World champions Germany crashed out of the World Cup in the group stage after a defeat to South Korea, which was one of the biggest surprises in the history of the competition.
The four-time champions went out of the game in a dead heat, conceding two goals in extra time as they tried to score the goal that would have qualified them for the next stage.
In a thrilling final stage of the match, a 92nd-minute goal from Kim Young-Gwon, which was initially disallowed for offside but was ruled to be offside after a video referee’s decision, put Germany on the brink of elimination.
Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who was becoming increasingly desperate, had the ball taken away in the opponent’s half late in stoppage time. Joo Se-Jong sent the ball forward, where Son Heung-Min easily scored the second goal into an empty net.
This sparked jubilant celebrations from the South Koreans, while some German fans in the shocked stadium were left in tears, four years after watching their team lift the trophy in Rio, beating hosts Brazil 7-1 in the semi-finals.
This is the first time since 1938 that Germany have failed to make it past the first stage of the tournament, with Joachim Löw’s side finishing last in Group F at this year’s tournament.
