The USMNT finally has competitive games this summer, with the CONCACAF Nations League in June and Gold Cup in July. Berhalter will be going into both tournaments hoping to win a trophy but just how much pressure is Gregg under?

The Nations League roster will likely include American stars like Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Gio Reyna and Sergino Dest so the team should expect to do well, but what about the Gold Cup? More importantly, if Berhalter doesn’t win either tournament, should his job be at risk?

I outline 3 reasons why the team HAS to win one of the trophies on offer and what should happen to Berhalter if they don’t. I also take Q&As from Twitter.

Come say hi!

  1. I would say Berhalter has to make the final in at least one of the tournaments this summer, even though it is expected that the US makes both finals. If he fails to reach the finals in either of the tournaments then it’s time to move on, right?

  2. What would it take for me to sack berhalter? Showing up for the next game. This guy is mediocre at best. The players are of high enough quality to receive better leadership. It's like watching a 16 year old, who barely got his drivers license, drive a formula 1 race car!

  3. Ok. I am only 4:00 in so far. But I don't think that winning the trophy is the most important part. We could win by parking the bus and putting in long balls and hope for a goal on a set piece. But I would rather see good soccer. If we lose to Mexico 2-1 in terra time with a really good match where both teams play at a high level. Then I am happy. Yeah it sucks that we didn't win. But I think playing good soccer and scoring goals in the run of play with good passing and building out of the back. I really hope that we win and get to go to the World cup in Qatar and play good soccer and once again shock the world when they realize the USMNT is no longer the joke of the soccer world.

  4. Don't take Oscar from us. He's the one coach who's made us more than a punching bag in MLS.

From an Orlando City fan getting flashbacks of our first 5 years in MLS.

  5. I like what you said about quality over experience and pointing out that these young players are experienced already.
I would say Reyna, Dest, Mckennie and Pulisic has way more quality experience in the last 4 years then Bradley or Altidore. They don’t have a place on the USMNT not because they suck but because these young kids have already proven they are way more valuable with all they’ve accomplished in such short amount of time

  6. Bob Bradley beat Mexico in a Gold Cup final… the only manager who did that! We've lost three finals to Mexico since then. Our best chance to win the Gold Cup is for Mexico to not make the final, unfortunately.

  7. Great take!! I saw a comment on another platform where people were saying there were cautiously optimistic about our player pool. I'm like Cautious? Noone shold be cautious, our player pool is so far superior to anything I have seen in the USMNT for 30 years! Now is the time for unbridled enthusiasm! This is a Golden Age! If Berhalter blows this it's on him. For the very first time the talent is there!

  8. Jesse Marsch won't leave Leipzig for the US job. I also think any replacement from MLS would be a huge disappointment for USSF since they can financially afford anyone they want. I would much rather see someone with experience at a higher level.

  9. The experience excuse is nothing more than excuse. McKennie, Pulisic, Adams, Dest etc have way more experience playing with and against the type of talent we will be competing against in the world cup on a weekly level. That experience far outstrips anything the old guard bring to the table.

  10. Are US players in Europe required to be released for the Gold Cup per FIFA? ie players like Durkin if requested by US Soccer.

  11. Gets me upset to think someone thats not qualified is coaching the most talented team US has ever produced to date. Hey Yanks did you see MLS rank US depth chart? One of them had Zardes as the starter and they keep bringing up Jozy name into the mix

  12. Berhalter is under no pressure unless qualification looks in threat again. Which honestly it can't be with this group of players.

Winning a trophy is the minimum, I agree. But USSF doesn't agree, despite the dubious nature of his hiring.

And I would say, given the events of the last 72hrs, Jesse Marsch is off the table for the foreseeable future. And that is the best news GGG ever could have had.

  13. jesse marsch would absolutely 1000% not take the usmnt coaching job if offered now atm. He is currently moving on up in the bundesliga as a manager and I doubt he would put that on hold to take a job for a us team that though talented it is unproven internationally and young which may or may not be able to perform well in a world cup. 2026 however, the dude would definitely jump at the chance for sure..

  14. pete do ya know anything about chris richards injury like how long hes out its a shame cause hes been fantastic lately 🙁

  15. It sucks that money makes us soccer federation and MLS go crazy and not youth development and success in local region and world stage

  16. can all USMNT fans just agree to never say “michael bradley” ever again and pray to god nobody ever gives us a reason to do so??
