The 2014 World Cup produced a semi-final that nobody will ever forget. “The night Germany removed the crown from football royalty”, The Athletic’s Daniel Taylor wrote in his match report describing the way Germany scored 7 goals past Brazil.

It was the game that reduced an entire country to tears, as described by Seb Stafford-Bloor, illustrated by Marco Bevilacqua.

  1. Only if Neymar didn't get injured… that foult was made on purpose to critically injure him and not play in the semi finals

  2. This game was truly one of the most jaw dropping “you had to be there in the moment” moments in sporting history, every minute that passed was truly a dagger to the heart of every Brazilian fan/player/team and pure shock around the world.

  3. When a team loses 7-1 it's the coach's fault, but in Brazil the opposite happened, people prefer to blame the players, and Felipão was unharmed because of his previous history in brazilian football and because he coached the teams that the brazilian media loves, this team from 2014 was weak, but blaming them exclusively for the defeat is idiotic, for me Felipão represents the backwardness of Brazilian football better than anyone else.

  4. Honestly I just think it's funny that the "best national team of all time" kids have something to cry about. Also warra world cup for Peymar

  5. I am Brazilian and live in Germany. During the WC EVERYBODY in my classroom, who liked football couldn’t stop talking about this game. I have the feeling that this loss will be haunting Brazilians forever

  6. This just shows how weak and a sore loser Tite is, even after being completely massacred by the Germans Luiz Felipe still hugged and comforted every single Brazilian player that was on the field, but Tite threw a hissy fit and went into the locker rooms when Brazil lost a close game that could've gone either way

  7. As Argentinian and futbol lover, i didn't enjoy that match… maybe the first or two goals; by the third/four i was in shock and not enjoying that. I want Brazil to win so we can have Argentina-Brasil in Maracana.

Then, again, in Qatar the chance of a semis Argentina-Brasil was an incredible proposition.

  8. i remember the morning of the day the match happened. I had a distinctly bad feeling that Brazil would collapse without Neymar and T.Silva, but in no way could i have foreseen what happened on the pitch. It was truly a moment of disbelief

  9. I was in Israel at the time, and my friend wouldn't stop reminding me about it. I remember telling him, 'Hey, it's not my fault I wasn't playing.' He just laughed and said, 'Of course it's your fault. You're Brazilian.'"

  10. I honestly don't know what happened to their psyche after the first goal because before that they were actually dominating the Germans for the first eleven minutes then Thomas Muller scored and it looked like they just gave up. The Germans had huge gaps within their gameplan throughout the entire game, usually Brazil would punish opponents for this like they had done throughout the tournament but this time they looked like they didn't want to, like they had just given up. I don't know what happened to their mental state or if they thought that that one goal was the end of the world but after their game looked sloppy, like they were guys who didn't wanna be there. After that they played more slowly with less aggression, they looked incapable of building play from their half to the Germans and if I'm being honest with you they looked scared after that first goal and I don't know why. If they had kept that same mindset they had for the first eleven minutes they very well could've made it through, I mean 1-0 down this isn't anything new, this is a situation that they've been in many times before maybe not in the tournament but their players have certainly been in that position before at club level but I guess international level they didn't know how to deal with it.

  11. The worst thing is, Brazil can beat Germany, but they'd never be able to get revenge for that humiliation, like they'd never be able to score 7 goals against them.

On top of that Germany did that to Brazil at their own World Cup. 😵

I don't think the word "humiliation" covers it.

  12. I remember watching Brazil's first game that world cup and I remember saying to my brother that they looked sloppy and anxious. I was never impressed with them.

The day of the semi-final I told my aunt that I thought Germany would win.

In football the underdog always has a shot at winning if they play their cards right but I really do believe this game simply exposed Brazil for how unorganized they were. I would have thought a 2-0 or 2-1 or 3-1 for Germany. Or maybe Brazil stole the game at penalties. To predict such a blowout is ridiculous but perhaps they needed it because the entire time I knew they were over-hyped by people and the media. Just look at their first few games again they weren't a solid moving team. They were chaotic but not as creative as previous Brazilian teams.

  13. Have you ever heard of that story that goes, "The coach called them during half time and told them to slow down, that they're already winning by a large margin" and one of the players who happens to score the next half was in the toilet when the meeting was happening? It was from this match the story came from. But not sure if it's true. Andre Schurlle was said to have been in the bathroom when the meeting happened and scored two goals after half time. Now it's being used in similar matches, like Barcelona vs Bayern in the UCL or Manchester United vs City in the 2022-2023 Etihad Derby.

  14. Mesut Ozil took the Brazilian midfield to the cleaners that day. He was just distributing the passes to Kroos, Khedira, cutting through the defence like butter and came very close to scoring one himself, in the second half.

  15. One of those matches you remember where you were when you were watching it. Me and my dad were absolutely stunned, both watching in disbelief.

  16. I remember staying in a campground outside of a pub in Freiburg traveling with friends. I was the only soccer fan in the group, so I was following the game on my phone. When the pub next to us began erupting in cheers minutes apart and even my non soccer friends all joined to watch the rest of the match. We partied with the local German crowd and had a great night!
Being half Colombian, I was happy with the result
