Newcastle have been quick to replace the departed Daryl Janmaat who left the same day to join Watford as American international DeAndre Yedlin came in for a fee of around £5m from Spurs.

  1. lets just c how he does in the first game, hopefully mitro will be fit and can link up with Yedlin send in some good crosses and yous that tunder of a head that mitro has 😛

  2. I'm over the fookin' mewn! I know first hand this bloke is the real deal I live in the us and have watched almost everyone of his us caps and a couple Sunderland ones dispite what u said how he isn't the best on defense I would argue that he is capable of shutting down the likes of messi on his day I think he will fit well onto rafas system and I can't wait to see him on the good side of the tyne

  3. thing is he's young so with rafa teaching yedlin, his amazing defensive tactics, by the time we get back to the prem he'll be much much better at defending, so to answer your question, yes he is and will be better that janmaat when we get back in the prem.

  4. The good thing is that janmaat would leave that gap that yedlin will most likely leave as well while attacking. But yedlin would sprint his all to get back and defend where as janmaat would either give up or just not be fast enough to to recover. Another thing is janmaat was to easy to predict on the defensive side. If a winger would cut in on him the next possession Darryl would cheat inside and get done to the outside where yedlin doesn't seem to "bite" as much as janmaat did

  5. He's got one assist for Newcastle already – his foul throw that led to Mitrovic's equaliser in the Derby, here's to many more!

  6. I think we should have kept Janmaat so we would have right back cover with both him and Anita, and we should have brought Yedlin in as a winger. With his outstanding pace but not good defensively he would make a much better winger than right back, but still i'm very happy with the signing, he'll bring allot of pace to the side – something that we've been really missing, and as for the Brighton game – with a full house behind the lads i can see us winning 2-0.

  7. He's got some legs on him like aha. He's unreal at getting up the line but I think he'll get pushed about defensively for the first couple of games but he will be a cracking full back in a couple of weeks for sure.

  8. There was a stat graph that was shown when Yedlin appeared vs. when he didnt. Now obviously there are other variables to consider in what I am about to say like Kone joining them and Kirchoff and the like…so that definitely helped to skew any results but Sunderland actually conceded a couple more goals in the 15 games he didnt play vs. the 23 that he did. So an 8 game gap yet they conceded less. I think by the end of the year he was fine especially for Championship level. He is still raw and that might seem odd at the age of 23 BUT he didnt really commit to the sport until he was about 16. He would play a couple months each year up until the age of 16. He was also an attacking mid in high school and has only played defense for about 4.5 years…3 of which were in America. As Jurgen Klinsmann has said, his learning curve is tremendous as he knows that he has soem definite things to work on and puts in the work. I think a year in the Championship, getting that confidence and now knowing this is the team that signed him long term as one of their main options at the position, he will play with more confidence. One thing Newcastle fans will love if that he is someone who always gets up for it. He'll make mistakes like anyone will but he isnt gonna sulk about like Janmaat started doing. He will always give an effort.

Yedlin actually is no where near his ceiling. Like I alluded too, he is relatively new to the sport especially at a higher level than the American brand. So growth potential is pretty high. I think he can become an average Premier League RB maybe slightly above that. That is probably his ceiling but his pace is second to none. Hector Bellerin broke Walcott's record a summer ago for speed with a 4.4 40 dash. Yedlin runs a 4.25 (would be top 10 in NFL Draft combine history in the states-those stats are only recorded since 2007 for anyone wanting to piss on the NFL comparison). My point being with Ritchie on the right, Yedlin even if he doesnt have the ball will create space because the LB will have to follow thus leaving Ritchie 1 v 1 a lot of the time. I think Ritchie will benefit tremendously once they work up a trust with each other.

I think also with Anita in place, it allows Newcastle against the better teams, especially early on in the campaign while Yedlin gets acclimated, can play Anita to be more defensive. Then against lesser teams, unleash Yedlin's pace and open the games. So it helps Rafa have more to work with strategically game to game. Plus Yedlin can be a sub as he has played on the wing for the US and can be a late game sub to put at RM to add extra cover and pace on the counter as teams try to work from behind. Also he looked very good at LB in preseason for Spurs against Inter and Atletico. In fact he was more impressive out of position than Trippier was on the right. Some Spurs fans wanted Trips sold and not Yedlin but Yedlin really wanted to play and that was unlikely with two guys ahead of him on Pochetino's depth chart. He is a blue collar player and will fight for the badge. Something Newcastle has needed these last couple years are those types. With Benitez's coaching ability and Yedlin's desire to become as good as he can be long term, this could work out really well for Yedlin and the club. Plus its a low risk move cause MLS will buy guys back if need be (see Jozy Altidore turning into Defoe for Sunderland and essentially the reason they are still in the Prem). So if it doesnt work out, Newcastle can recoup most of the investment. Good job by management.

FWIW I have watched Yedlin grow up in the Sounders system as I am a Seattle supporter and watched him overcome a lot of obstacles and watched him prove A LOT of people wrong from day 1 with the first team in Seattle. He plays his ass off and I have seen him hustle back 60 yards in the 90th minute to make tackles, tells you the kind of commitment he has cause those types of plays, you see tired players jog back. That is rarely the case with him (obviously he does get tired). I will be watching, via the net, every match I can. Also Yedlin is well liked by his teammates everywhere so that speaks to a good person in the locker room. Sorry for the longevity but just thought I would chime in about DeAndre. Cant wait to see the Black and White back in the Prem soon. Cheers

  9. I think Yedlin is young and is eager to establish himself as a first-eleven.  Yes. A lil gutted that Janmaat left. Well hopefully, Yedlin's work rate is twice as much as Janmaat. I don't expect him to nick a few goals in (but who knows?) but rather,  a lil bit more better defending than his predecessor would be nice.

  10. I think DeAndre could be a signing that we keep after promotion. Let's be honest, a few of our signings are just not quite good enough for the top, but DeAndre is. He will learn a lot in his time in the Championship. Hopefully Rafa will improve Yedlins defending, which isn't bad, he just needs to learn some positional and tactical ideas so he doesn't have to rely on his pace so much. He can be a great long term player for us.

  11. Yedlin is a good young defender with a lot of upside to his game. In terms of development, he is still shaping and is quite raw in terms of being smart of the pitch—IMO. However, that he gets a lot of international playing time really helps him. I think he is a solid pick up. And, his ridiculous speed is always going to give him an advantage at recovering when he makes a mistake. It'll be interesting I think.
