  1. Reynolds is easily a $200 mil player. His arb discount figured into this deal is really light too. He was high in ROY voting, has been the only good Pit hitter for like 4 years now, he would be getting around $20 mil by final year of Arb I'd imagine (especially since he was super 2 I believe). So he sold himself way short on AAV (which should've ended up at least $20-25 mil even including the discount of the 3 remaining Arb years that include this year). Should've been looking in $160-180 mil over 8-9 years at least. He is set for life either way, but definitely feels like Pit got a big discount here. Which they definitely don't deserve given their reputation (this is not an Atlanta situation where you can at least guarantee contention and fun baseball for your entire career). I am loving the energy around their team this year and good for the fans to have some guys to really buy in on. Still not overly optimistic about their future even with a good farm system. Their FO and ownership has given me almost no reason to trust them.

  2. 2 teams have won a world series in the wild card era with a payroll below the league average. The Florida Marlins twice. Yes Trevor. Payroll absolutely matters maybe not to be competitive but it matters to win the only actual thing that means anything. Competitive balance is broken. It has always been broken. Fix revenue sharing for Christ’s sake Manfred

  3. I think what Trevor is going for is what the draft rule changes are trying to address. I don't think the current rules will work. But personally, I'd make the draft rules be if you had a sub 75 win season 3 years in a row (or something like that, maybe an even higher mark), you draft after all non playoff teams until you get a winning record again. That essentially ends the ability to tank for years on years. I'd also drop their international signing pool accordingly. If they are going to suck for that long, they need to start spending on established talent, not hoping and praying that their development team finally builds a young core.

  4. Vegas is still going to be a home stadium for away teams. It is not a large enough city to instantly field a large fan base. It will mostly be a tourist thing, like going to a magic show or concert. They'll make money, but people will be going to see a game or to see their team's game, not to see the As. Unless the As really spend and become a more national favorite. Which I doubt

  5. And That's Baseball has an incredible video about how Artie Moreno built that high payroll. No team in baseball has more wasted cap space than them. Most of his big payroll is built in massive contracts to players, and he doesn't fill out the margins where competitive baseball teams are made. It's all shock and awe value and commercialization. Not about being competitive.

  6. Californians entering your state is indeed a shit thing to happen because they envision where they move is the shithole they helped create.

  7. Teams that don't spend are only good once in a while, orioles were horrible for a gooood while. Rays are an exeption. I think it's kinda whishful thinking to just look at this year and say you don't need to spend to win.

  8. The extension of both Sheltie (who you can see very clearly cares about the guys in every interaction) and Reynolds, PLUS Cutch's return has already been a dream-come-true for me. B-Rey had been playing well despite it hanging over his head, but I'm sure this is a weight off his shoulders. He's said before that he loves the fans and loves the team, but just needed the right deal. And whether or not we think it's enough, it's the deal he was willing to take and I'm grateful for it!

  9. I know this might sound like a crazy theory, but my understanding is Nutting is obsessed with Reynolds hence why they haven't traded him before. Reynolds had also expressed liking the Pirates before he requested the trade, so my theory is that Cherington and Reynolds colluded and decided to request a trade to basically strong arm Nutting into being willing to give a reasonable extension.

  10. You guys never give love to the Giants (fair enough cause they haven't been very good), but they are doing what Trav is talking about. They missed out on big FA signings and their farm sucks, so they went out and got people to put a competitive team on the field (Rodon, Peterson, Comforto, Hanniger, etc).

It sucks for fans because those guys tend to rotate after a year or two (Rodon), but it is better than nothing while trying to restocking the farm.

  11. Don't forget the Pirates have the #1 overall pick in the draft this year, Dylan Crews is looking like a lock for that top pick

  12. The reason for the white Sox never signing a 100mil player is because their owner Jerry Reinsdorf is one of the cheapest billionaires on the planet and it shows. He cheaps out on the White Sox AND the Bulls and it’s depressing as well as part of the reason that their current contention window is looking like a failure. Also Kenny Williams “stepped down” as GM and is now a phantom GM pulling strings while not employed which is so fucked up. Technically Rick Hahn is the GM even though Kenny still makes the decisions and is in Jerry’s pocket. Sad stuff :/

  13. I'm just saying hi. It's me. The guy who kept pointing out that Reynolds maintained through all trade talks that he preferred to stay in Pittsburgh. I'm just a happy boy saying hi!

  14. You can put Reynolds in real rare air if you start doing stuff like OPS over .800 combined with BA over .280 and stuff line that to cut it up real nice. Jakey Butterknife get on it.

  15. As long as John fisher is the Athletics owner, he will never deal out a 9 figure for someone. It's empty promises and the San jose earthquakes are prove that he doesn't give a shit

  16. Am I in the minority here? I totally might be, but this doesn't work without the trio. Jomboy is literally (in every sense) the main go to. I love Jake and Trev's input but I can't help but skip until they get the band back together

  17. Thanks for talking about the salary floor stuff. As an A’s fan, these last few weeks have really taken a lot of the fun out of baseball for me. It sucks to say but it’s truly difficult to be loyal to a team that isn’t loyal to you. Not really sure what I’ll do when they move. As much as I love the game, so much of my love for the game came from pride for my team. That’s a pride that at some point can only be betrayed so many times.

  18. As far as the payroll portion of the show, pittsburgh is a great example of why you should be at least spending some money in the lean years and trev is absolutely right. The pirates are in first, tied for the second best record in baseball and they still can't get more than like 15k to show up to a game. Im a diehard and I'm locked in every year, but a lot of people aren't ready to hop back on the bandwagon yet, and i can't say i blame them. So now they have alienated the fanbase for so long that some people won't come out to see a first place team. At least not yet.

  19. Im not through the whole "under the radar" segment, but everyone in pittsburgh is obviously hyped on Cutch, and rightfully so. But Carlos Santana is doing really well right now. 5 game hitting streak. Getting nice at bats, no shift is helping a lot. He's got a couple steals which is awesome. And with Choi out with injury, that pickup is really important right now.
