I have been trying to work out why it 'appears' the decline of Utd has been so stark since SAF.
I realised the window after Glazers took over 05/06 we signed Park, Van Der Sar, Vidic & Evra all for less than 30m. Arguably the best window of the Glazer era.
The scouting department has been ATROCIOUS since then with literally 1 in every 5 being a 'Utd' type player, on top of that we still had elements of the class of '92 & Ronaldo, around that also made it seem the 'scouts' were good.
Even Ronnie wasn't bought because of the scouts…he was bought after the preseason game vs sporting!!!
What we saw last season was the total culmination of poor buying since that window (as i said with the odd exception that covered for the MANY MANY mistakes)
Whilst i have always hated the Glazers, Woodward & Judge era….seriously the scouting department has to take a HUGE HUGE HUGE portion of the blame.
In a very small way i have a tiny amount of sympathy with my hatred for Woodward…i mean he admittedly had no idea about football…so he was massively naive but also too trusting of the scouting dept.
Only SAF made it appear everything was fine…but to be honest UTD had been signing 4 or 5 terrible players for every 1 that was great, since 05/06.
Im glad Lawlor and co finally got booted out with Woodward & Judge. Im actually abit relieved as although we are in a terrible position now…even if we get a scouting department that is half decent we should start buying better!
Even though Murtough has started this window slowly..to be on the cusp of FDJ & Malacia for under £100m is actually a decent effort….considering in recent times we've been paying close to £100m for 1 player at a time.
This period might be very painful still BUT i have more hope for the future than i did 9 weeks ago.
Im probably more happy with Malacia than FDJ. I mean midfield IS terrible but just thinking that now either side of Maguire we'd have Varane & now Malacia im hopeful they might be able to cover for his many errors!
I'd sell Telles, & keep Williams as cover for LB and could probably be more trusted at RB + he still a youngster who could get better discipline from ETH.
I would love another CB, RB, RW & Striker but i think thats dreamland!..
Im putting this out there as a 'hail mary' but i think ETH could re-train McTominay as a CB. I KNOW that sounds crazy but i'd sooner trust McTominay at CB because of his pace any day than Maguire!!
Hopefully AWB, Pereira & Jones at a minimum can now be sold..
Tbh…if we get FDJ & Malacia + Eriksen over the line we get instantly more attractive to prospective Dutch national players & some of the smaller leagues.
We still can't compete with City, Liverpool or Chelsea.
