  1. Rangers squad needs rid of some players – no passion. Kent, Davies, Tillman, whoever that other midfielder was… Get some Glaswegians back in there

  2. Good lord the absolute sh*te being chatted by some about Furuhashi not being good enough for Japan is mind blowing wham.

I can only give my opinion as a football fan who lives in Japan and speaks Japanese, so for what it's worth here it is.
Furuhashi, Hatate and Maeda are all top players who played for the top teams in the J-League. The J-League overall is probably more "balanced" than the Scottish League (and even the Premier League, though that may change with new prize money rules coming in to give more cash to the top teams… another story for another time), but I'd say most teams would give Rangers a good game, and the top teams would give Celtic a good game. However, the pressure levels are different, Celtic and Rangers are expected to win every week domestically, and the Champions League / Europa League is miles better than the Asian equivalents right now. It's good for these players to be under this kind of pressure, its not something many Japanese players get in Europe, where they often play for "smaller" teams with lower expectations (Kamada at Frankfurt is the only other one I can think of that's under real pressure week in and week out, and Frankfurt are stinking the place out this season).

SO, why doesn't Moriyasu pick Kyogo or Reo especially? Why does he hardly even play Maeda? Easy, he has a set way of playing that's conservative and IMO antiquated. He's actually been taunted a bit in Japan as "The guy at the office who got promoted to boss because everyone else hated each other and he just sat quietly in a corner". Kind of like Gareth Southgate, he doesn't rock the boat and is Japanese, BIG plusses for the JFA.

Moriyasu doesn't play high press football, he plays mid-low block defence with counter attacks. In other words, he plays like St. Johnstone might against Celtic. Long balls, sideways passes, static positioning. It's one reason Japan struggled (relatively) in qualifying, because they are so much stronger compared to most other Asian countries that they're facing packed defences and low-block counters almost every game, and Moriyasu's tactic don't really play well against that. Many times the team looked lost on how to score against these defences and scored eventually due to mistakes or wonder shots. It was very frustrating to watch, as we know these players are technically very good and creative in attack. Moriyasu likes Maeda for the same reason, he works hard and is very fast, perfect for hitting long balls behind opposition defences. Moriyasu's tactics worked (with some luck) in the World Cup against Spain and Germany, who attacked and tried to control the game. They failed spectacularly against the only team in the group who ceded control and possession for defence and counters. That game against Costa Rica was very familiar to those of us who'd watched them in qualifying. Moriyasu likes players like Doan or Ito who can create goals from nothing at all (they did in qualifying a couple of times), usually with wonder shots (9/10 of which don't go in…).

Kyogo is a goalscorer, he did in fact score a lot of goals in the J-League for Kobe, the reason he didn't score for Japan is the same reason he hasn't scored in the Champions League yet, low number of games, and low number of chances within those games. He WILL score in the Champions League for Celtic, it's just a matter of experience and time (for him and Ange, because the Champions League is where tactical nous and experience are REALLY tested, and you only have 6 games guaranteed). However, he functions as a finisher and needs to be fed by teammates. That's not how Japan plays under Moriyasu, and it frustrates the hell out of me and others here.
As for Hatate? Ya got me there. No idea at all. Moriyasu seems to really like Endo, and most football watcher's I know were quite mystified when he called up Shibasaki (who is dreadful) and not Hatate. Sometimes managers just have "their guys", and Endo and Shibasaki seem to be those guys for Moriyasu. The pity call-up for Kawashima, who to be fair retired right after the tournament, was understandable, but still frustrating when that place could've gone to Hatate or Furuhashi (who, uniquely in the squad, actually played Champions League football this season).

Sorry for the essay. If you read it, cheers. Again, this is just my opinion from observing the situation. Don't go taking this as gospel or whatever!

  3. Gotta love Celtic and their fans. Always got a solid asian player and showing love. Nakamura, Ki Seung yung, now Furuhashi. But wow really the fans are amazing, my ears are ringing.
