US Olympian Lopez Lomong was the talk around the world after miscounting laps in the 5000 meters at the 2012 Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational at Stanford on April 29th, however he still went on to win and run the world leading time of 13:11. Many wondered what he was thinking….so were we…..so we asked him. Check it out

  1. lol that is awesome. Love listening to the Flotrack guys, they are so passionate about track and say exactly what I'm thinking as I'm watching!

  2. I seriously doubt he was looking at the clock. When I ran, it was all about going all out. Never bothered to look at the clock. My pr in 5k was okay. A 14:52 isn't much to brag about. Wish I could've ran as fast as these guys.

  3. good one; I lol'd ….except the crazy thing is that that would imply 1/10,000 wouldn't be blown blown away, whereas the rest of the world would have, so it's more like 99.99999992% that one beats with a world-leading time.

  4. I've done this on my 2 mile indoors. After 14 laps out of the 16 I lost count and shaved off my pr by 30 seconds. I got away with it too… oops.

  5. Thats actually a brilliant way to win a race, and I think as time goes on all athletes get faster and fitter we will start to see the races sprinted from 800m out as a regular not the final 150 or 200 or even 400.

  6. To think the world record is 12:37.35 DAMN! So basically this guy would have broken the record by finishing a lap before but the other guys would have gotten lapped in the 5k LOL

  7. Lopez would have won anyways. And this strategy wouldn't always work unless you were way better than the rest of the field. I mean, Torrence (RIP) ended up getting passed up, which would have happened to everyone else that isn't Lopez Lomong

  8. This might be the motivational track video of all time.  It shows that we all hold something back.  When you hold nothing back, you can exceed all expectations and shatter your wildest dreams!

  9. Stop saying this was optimal lol. He slowed down and the 59 is from 4400 to 4800 not the final 400. He simply was in the best shape in the field and would be hard to stop no matter what strategy played out

  10. Sorry, poor meet management. A bunch a officials standing around with a $300 lap display and they can't keep the athletes informed? 12+ laps and an official should be keeping them informed the entire race.
