John Collins joins us this time from the Fly Fishing and Wingshooting Expo and shows us one of his favorite soft hackle patterns for spring. The Little Black Stone is a common fly here in my area with a fairly long hatch time once the weather breaks. Some people watch for the crocus’ to start popping up through the ground as their first sign of spring. For me I watch for the Little Black Stones.
John Created this fly in his style of tying using ultra wire inside a piece of stretch tubing. Another great thing about this pattern is it allows you to use up the head feathers on that ringneck skin you have laying around and thought you had no use for.
If you’re a soft hackle guy this fly should be part of your early spring fly box. Give it a try and go to our website to find the materials needed to tie this pattern. Thanks for watching. -Shawn

Looks great. I don't have those exact materials, but I'll improvise and see what happens.
Nice fly
I'm going to assume to tie this in an 18 or 20?
JC style is the Best
The Electric Tier
John is awesome
Thanks great video
Great little fly J.C. and Shawn. I tie something similar like the old English spider fly. I just picked up some midge D-Rib which I could use as well but of course minus the wire inside because the D-Rib is not hollow. one question how does he fish the fly by swinging, as a dropper, or under a indicator. Or all three. thanks for the video and keep them coming. Nice job
I really love J.C.'s patterns that i've been lucky enough to see. Every pattern i've seen by him utilize his ingenious wire in tubing abdomen and just scream out to be added to your box. Something about his designs just scream fish catching to me, and all the ones i've used by him have had success. Thanks for sharing this pattern, i'll be adding it to my L.B.S. patterns.
