In a night that can only be called a legendary night of European football, France and Switzerland were involved in yet another high-scoring thriller. In what can be called the upset of the tournament, World Cup winners France were knocked out by an insurgent Switzerland in a penalty shootout. Haris Seferovic gave the Swiss the lead in the 15th minute. But it was the French who reigned supreme and scored three goals on the trot in the second half after Ricardo Rodriguez’s missed penalty. Karim Benzema scored twice and Paul Pogba netted a belter to give France a two-goal cushion. But the Swizz had other plans in mind as Seferovic pulled one back in the 81st minute and Mario Gavranovic scored the equaliser all the way in the 90th minute. Extra time was not enough to separate the sides as the game went into a penalty shootout. It was Yann Sommer who turned out to be the hero for the Swiss as he denied Kylian Mbappe from the spot to take his side through to the quarterfinals of Euro 2020 after pulling off an incredible heist.
Spain became the first team to make their way into the semifinals of the Euro 2020 with a penalty shootout win over Switzerland after a 1-1 scoreline past 120 minutes. Denis Zakaria’s 8th-minute own goal gave Spain the lead before Xherdan Shaqiri equalised for the Swiss. Jordi Alba’s deflected off Zakaria and into the goal. Switzerland went a man down after Remo Freuler was awarded a red card for a cynical challenge. The match was 1-1 until the 120th minute and was forced into penalties. Spain missed two but Switzerland missed three penalties to give the Spaniards the win.
Denmark continued their impressive streak in the Euro 2020 with a staggering win over Czech Republic in a 1-2 encounter at the Bakı Olimpiya Stadionu. Denmark scored the first two goals of the game with goals in the 5th and 42nd minutes. Thomas Delaney and Kasper Dolberg scored the goals. The Czechs did manage to pull once back in the 49th minute thanks to Patrik Schick. But that was it for them as no further goals were scored. The match ended 1-2 to Denmark.
