The Canada Soccer Men’s National Team completed a successful March international window with comfortable victories over Curaçao and Honduras in Concacaf Nations League action, booking their spot in the competition’s semi-finals to set a date in Las Vegas vs. Panama, ahead of a potential final against the U.S. men’s national team or Mexico.
The CanMNT also booked a spot in the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup and moved into fourth in the region’s FIFA World Rankings, which could prove vital as John Herdman’s Canada looks to also compete in the 2024 Copa América.
But, beyond those qualifications and successes, what else did we learn about Canada in their first return to play since the 2022 FIFA World Cup? We discuss a new 3-5-2 formation, Alphonso Davies and Tajon Buchanan in new wing-back roles, how club form have propelled Jonathan David and Cyle Larin to new heights, and many more talking points.

I've been saying for 2 years that they need to play a dual striker with Oso in an attacking midfield position but for some reason it never happened. Then all of as a sudden AFTER the World Cup that's we where land? I don't get why it took so long. Oso is Canada's closest thing to a #10 playmaker and what team doesn't want to maximize their playmaker – especially with such a potent attack in David & Larin plus Davies and Buchanan? Then, you drop in solid 2-way central midfielders like Eustaquio and possibly Kone (Frasier, Loturi or Choiniere can play that role as can Piette ) and voila you have a very potent attack with very strong defensive capabilities. Add in 3 strong CBs or a CB and 2 defensive minded FBs and you have a Gold Cup champion and a team that will do damage in both the next Copa America and World Cup. I really hope Kone can play that role because he's a big boy and it never hurts to have a very physical center midfielder with some height. What is also good is that Laryea and Adekugbe make for excellent subs into the wingback positions (who need to run a lot and can tire after 70 min). We have several CBs (Vitoria, Miller, Kennedy, Cornelius, Hiebert, Johnston, Waterman and Zator) and so after the starters float to the top, we have 3+ more that can be subs. We have some decent strikers as subs such as Ugbe, Akinola, Brym or even a de Rosario but one of them really need to step up as a reliable 3rd – someone who is pushing Larin and David.
formation are design for team success, and in so doing making it easier for your best players to shine
Why were we NOT using this line up in Qatar? I feel Hutch, Piette and Kaye got in the way of our best line up along with Davies not wanting to play where he is best.
Loved alex's hit on 650, go CanMT
Lol big dogs? howd the world cup go for ya? when did you last win a trophy? 25 years ago? 30?
Starting midfield 2026:
Eustaquio, Kone, Jeevan Badwal
I was at the game on tuesday, I liked Herdman's formation with two CAMs… Cornelius looked good out there with Johnston, but I'm not sold on making too much use of Kennedy (Miller will replace him once healthy I'm sure)… Kennedy lacks the quickness and energy that Kamal Miller brings to every game…
I didn't see you at the game Josh, but I saw your "Behind the Scenes" video… You looked like a star struck kid going to see Star Wars for the first time… I felt the same way… LOL…
But here's the thing guys, here's the takeaway… This game against Honduras was a missed opportunity for Canada Soccer… The CSA's approach to ticket pricing directly impacted the "WELCOME" our World Cup heroes received from the smaller crowd than they deserved. Honestly, it was bullshit to see those bleachers on the north end of BMO Field completely empty, not to mention closing the upper sections of seating were just bad optics… Where is the support? The ticket pricing was a display of CSA arrogance that created these bad optics.
I attended because I will not miss a game with our team… And nor should I have to "subscribe" to second rate stream of the game with minimal production effort. The main takeway lads is that many people cannot afford these ticket prices and the empty bleachers and seats showed that to Canada Soccer. The CSA missed an opportunity to reach out to players and fans during this time of poor corporate governance and the fact their Board continues to be numb and dumb to this fact is beyond disgraceful…
I'm just keeping it real, this is the takeaway… And the other one, Kone is going to be a "beast" in the midfield for the 2026 World Cup… Cheers lads…
Hopefully Canada Soccer learned that they can't charge Leafs/Raptors prices and still expect to sell out the place.
You're not that guy pal, you're not that guy
Kennedy needs a transfer, at this point MLS would be a step up even, as long as he gets minutes
Hate to say it but if Kamal Miller doesn't get a bit quicker he may end up being on the outside looking in with Kennedy, Cornelius and Hiebert all looking like solid options at CB. He looked slow at times at WC
