Dele Alli burst onto the scene as a 16 year old for MK Dons, by the age of 19 he was playing in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur and scoring goals for England.

Twice voted PFA Young Player of the Year he would become one of Spurs’ most important players. Yet at the age of just 26 he is in the Turkish league struggling to make an impact at Besiktas.

What went wrong for Dele Alli? Seb Stafford-Bloor writes, Craig Silcock illustrates.

  1. Everytime a young player from England get sold as the next Ballon D´Or winner it goes a similiar way. Thats why im not taking part in those hypes around them.

  2. He rejected Liverpool for Spurs, or maybe MK Dons favoured the Spurs bid, can't remember. I wonder how he would have fared under Klopp had he moved to Liverpool?

  3. People underestimate what injuries can do to you. You cant properly perform or train & always in constant fear a career injury might take place. Will never truly know until he retires but I believe injuries killed his career

  4. The way he turned up to his Everton reveal said a lot. He looked like a fashion model, decked out in all kinds of bling. When what he really needed to appear as was modest and ready to work.

  5. I saw him play v Germany when Kane score twice. England won 3-2 I think. He looked very good. Not sure what happened.

  6. One thing you missed that contributed to his decline was the moment he changed his agent, clearly in a signal of get me out of spurs and into a bigger club which did not go down well with the club or the fans

  7. I think he enjoyed the lifestyle more than football. When these top potential talents get paid fortunes they can lose their Hunger.

  8. Ordinary player who was made to look good by the truly smart teammates of Pochettino's Spurs: Dembele, Eriksen and Son. Once the first two were gone we saw the true Alli. Exactly the kind of player English people and Tifo will fantasise about for no real reason, outside of England people barely even know he exists.

  9. You missed out on when he got battered at knife point in his own home. His form really tailed off after that. He was let down by Spurs lack of investment.

  10. Dele alli made millions kicking a ball around, represented his country as a teenager, and changed the lives of one’s around him. But still receives hate from Cheeto dust covered fans in their mums basement.

  11. Besiktas don't even know where he is right now. He's in Turkey away from his family in UK. I think for his own mentally wellbeing and happiness he should return to UK and re-set himself. He still got a few years to turn this around and would love to see him do it!

  12. The implication is that his career is over. He's still quite young. There's no reason to think he can't make a comeback, perhaps not to the very top, but he could be a PM player again.
