TAEKWON-DO – In Korean, tae (태) means “foot”; kwon (권) means “fist”; and do (도) means “way” or “method”. Therefore, taekwondo can be translated as “the way or method of destroying with the hands and feet. The name taekwondo is also written as taekwon-do, tae kwon-do, or tae kwon do by various organizations.
BELT – In most Okinawan, Japanese, and Korean martial arts practitioners wear a long colored cloth belt around their waist. They are generally long enough to be wrapped twice around the wearer’s waist and then tied in a square knot, with 10 to 15 inches hanging from either side of the knot. Before the 20th century most belts were colorless, but since students were prohibited from washing their belts, belts grew steadily darker through the years of accumulated sweat and soil. When the color belt system of rank was incorporated, it was arranged so that the belt color became darker as the student advanced in rank, ending with the black belt, the highest level of proficiency. Belts vary according to style and type of martial art; in some schools there is only a small color tip on the end of the bet to show rank. The most common colors used in martial arts are white, yellow, orange, blue, green, purple, brown, red, and black.
BLACK BELT – Color of belt worn in Japanese, Okinawan, and Korean martial arts. Its wearer is generally recognized as an expert. In most styles there are 10 degrees of black belt, called Dan (rank; degree), in which the latter five are honorary. In some styles, the recognized master, a 10th degree black belt, will at his option wear a red belt.
DAN – Category of rank in the Japanese, Okinawan, and Korean martial arts that classifies students, instructors, and masters who wear the black belt.
DEGREE – Black belt rank given in a martial art to one who has completed a prescribed course of study. Though no such ranks were issued originally in the Chinese styles, other than master and student, many American kung-fu instructors have adopted a system similar to that used in karate and other arts..

I've looked at your patterns on You Tube and while your techniques are good your patterns are not correct. The patterns have not changed much from when they were taught in the Oh do kwan. For example, in this pattern, what is the movement before the side piercing kick? This should be a Bending Ready Stance.
I could not agree more with the comment below — your techniques are generally excellent (better than mine). But every pattern I have seen you do – is wrong. I am a black belt myself and am well aware of the "license" and interpretation arguments over style etc. I think you need to re-read Gen Choi's Manual and redo the videos – they would be excellent reference then. For example — L Stance is L Stance – it is not Fixed Stance!
I am learning this form now in the traditional style and it does appear that your execution is quite different from what I am being taught, details and chambering are all different.
@viewer1964 I am a 20 year Taekwon-do student and while that is great it does have limitations – in this situation i am limited to the instuction style of my Grand Master. I have noticed many differences in moves, techniques, forms, etc over my years of practice but out of respect for my style, oorganization, and Grand Master i must trust that what i am taught is true to the system i am taking. To answer you question, we are taught that the movement is a "side kick ready stance"
@marcct24 again it seems that while Taekwon-do is centralized and uniform there are small differences in its execution and teaching inside of the different branches and organizations that it runs. I am following the Jhoon Rhee hyungs rather than those of the late Grand Master and General Choi Hung Hi which could count for the differences in stances. In my system the term for "L stance" is " back stance" while we both use "fixed stance"
@TheAdamPoore I have picked up on movement variations among ATA, ITF, WTF, and my organization, UTI, in the execution of techniques and forms so while this hyung might look familiar i will agree it is not demonstrated the same one as you were taught or being taught by way of different instructors, organizations, kwan, etc.
@fightluv overall? a section? a technique?
@fr3ddi3mr1980 Thanks for the feedback — it is a very good point you make about the difference in organisations — But the pattern is WonHyo right? Back stance (or L Stance) is 70:30 weight distribution and 1.5 shoulder widths long (back heel to front toe)? and fixed stance is 2 shoulder widths. If this is different under Jhoon Rhee I apologise – my ignorance! If its the same, you need to look at your stances. As I said before – I think your technique execution is crisp and sharp!
Great vid. Good representation of Ohdokwan. Keep it up!
Good job! People who complain, without a video, are the kind of people that will have "I could have" on their tombstone. Ours will say we did!
This look a lot like what I learned. Although I haven't practice Tae Kwon Do in many years the only difference between this and what I learned is the rythm the movement patterns are either exactly the same or very similar. Thanks!
I did my black belt test with Grand Master Jhoon Rhee in 1993.
Good luck and congrats
Thank you
Thank you
We are taught it is a Side Kick Ready Stance
Thank You
Thank You
This is WRONG
what part or parts of this is wrong?
where is the spirit??? where is the fluidity???
I agree with you. I have this talk alot in the martial arts community I am close with and it is a common thing in all styles that are associated with my organization even among black belt students from the same master.
There were originally 12 masters that were assembled to solidify the various schoolskwans teachings into what we practice today as taekwon-do. Each of them brought to and carried away a flavor or signature in their teaching that makes it unique.
