Morocco defender Mehdi Benatia scored the winner deep into extra time to secure Udinese’s first win of the season in Serie A by beating Cesena 1-0 on Saturday.
Udinese seemed unable to convert dominance into goals as they produced a series of missed chances and twice hit the woodwork with Chilean Mauricio Isla and when Cesena Japanese defender Yumo Nagatomo deflected a flick from Giuseppe Colucci.
There was grit and will but no goals from Udinese international striker Antonio Di Natale, last season’s top scorer on 29 goals, but Benatia fired home after a scramble off a free kick.
Udinese remained at the bottom on four points from six games as they lost their first four games and drew 0-0 at Sampdoria last weekend.
Promoted Cesena appeared to have lost momentum after an amazing start to the season that saw them draw 0-0 at Roma and stun AC Milan 2-0. The newcomers moved level with giants Milan, who visit minnows Parma in a late game with a two-point gap from leaders Inter Milan.
