Street Legends is a three-part series that looks at athletes who dominate their niche sport while giving us a look at the duality of their lives. While they are hyped in the streets as “legends,” they still go through the mundane tasks of everyday life. We see the trials and tribulations of our athletes as they try to take their careers to the next level, push their niche stardom as far as possible or just use their sport as an escape from the ordinary nature of day-to-day living.

In this episode, we follow Joey Haywood, a.k.a. King Handles, as he tries out for Raptors 905 of the D-League in what could be his last shot at making it to the NBA.

  1. Honestly this guy needs to fucking grow up. I don't mean it in a condescending way, but fuck man you're 32 years old and you have a wife and two young kids. It's not like you're in your 20's still trying to get into the league, you're passed your prime and still getting rejected. I get that he still has a passion and a "burning desire" but at some point you gotta face reality and fucking grow up. It feels like he's chasing the lotto cuz he feels like his winning ticket is just around the corner. I'm not saying abandon basketball (which seems to be the main reason he keeps pursuing what he's pursuing), I'm saying stop trying to make the league. Be a trainer, try management, do social media (as he knows kids love streetball videos), but stop forcing your family to keep making sacrifices so you can pursue your personal dream. If you were still single with no children then do what you want, no one holding you back. But that's not the case anymore. You can't keep living like you're fresh outta college.

  2. Not sure why everybody is shitting on his dream, the guy is only 32 he still has some years left. Not only that but if things don't materialise he has a bright future in coaching. He's still providing for his family, they have a roof over their head and food to eat. The way I see it is, that is alot of positives he will build on, that's the recipe for success he most definitely is not a failure!

  3. This guy is his biggest enemy, because he won't keep his mouth shut and play Ball. They are not going to cater to him, because he a very good player, but there are a lot of good players.

  4. damn……his wife should be more encouraging to her man….maybe thats what he needs is for his wife to be right there saying "look just because they didnt pick you doesnt mean you werent good enough man….it just means that they couldnt handle what you bring to the table and i think you just need to keep pushing through the walls they make for you and persevere! what doesnt kill you makes you that much stronger and more knowledgeable keep at it and you will get there for sure!" thats what his woman should be saying instead of saying basically u should quit and walking away…..

  5. Joey is a legend in vancouver, champlain heights remembers. I remember him showing up whenever the gym was empty to get shots up. Dude worked hella hard and his camps were fun as hell.

  7. Yeah time to man up and be there for ur kids….the nba is a great dream that me, him, and millions of other kids dreamed about…but reality hits

  8. Why would they ever offer a 32 year old a tryout for a developmental league. He came in way too late to ever be anything. His fault, no one elses

  9. Im sorry but this dude is delusional af he’s 32 which isn’t young at all for an athlete and he’s got 2 damn kids he needs to grow tf up I feel sorry for his wife

  10. You got that level of commitment and passion to coaching you will be successful. If you give that much passion and hard works to a business, you will be successful. All we can do is hope for a feeling. A feeling of making it and let destiny allow your passion and hard work take you where you were meant to be. Regardless, if you give that same effort to anything, you will be successful. It’s hard to lose what we think we wanted but your destiny still has a great ending if you choose. Good luck.
