We’ve seen plenty of tactical changes to Man United under ten Hag; Shaw to centre-back, Lindelof to defensive mid, Weghorst in the 10 etc. but none have quite had the impact that Bruno Fernandes has had, being moved to the right wing. I will breakdown the tactics ten Hag is using for this to work and explain how and why it has been such a success…

0:18 ah yes, my favourite left-back luke draw
Love the way ETH using the squad (which is thin at many levels) so that everyone can contribute
The improvement in some of the players is unreal.
Long may it continue
Love Utd.
We can have an interchangeable front 4 ๐
The big difference i see between Bruno on the RW vs sancho/antony is the decisiveness. It feels like bruno has a plan and is executing it while the other two just seem indecisive and as if they're just going with the flow and in the end bruno has more end product than the other two
Erik is showing you can be an authoritative, no nonsense manager with strict discipline and high standards, and a thoughtful, modern tactician that plays exciting football at the same time. Hasn't required scapegoating anyone, hasn't taken a brand new starting 11. Just a few smart signings that fit the bill, and he's away.
He's making some other managers look like absolute dinosaurs right now.
The fact that they have taken all the new systems on board, are playing so many games, AND developing system shifts and developments so well is mind blowing.
I reckon EtH has hired some software engineers and all that time spent on coaches busses and planes, the whole team are sitting there with VR head sets on with Steve McClaren barking in their ears in crystal clear Dolby surround.
I am so scared that Qatar are going to steam in, fans are going to lose their minds at the gold wall paper, and then when the money boners soften, the Al Thani "Wish Fulfilment Department" sweep in, switch into PSG mode and sack the manager every 2 years, and we're all left thinking "Yeah… but the MONEY!"
I'm just afraid that by constantly playing Bruno wide, he may end up like Mata
I saw McTominay play centre back against Leicester at the weekend.
I don't know why it's seen so innovative. LVG played Mata on the right too in similar fashion.
He did the same with Tadic at Ajax. He likes his most creative player of the team on the wing.
I'd like to see Antony get a few minutes on the left wing before the end of the season. Just to have a look…. could be in a game that's already won.
He reminds me of Juan Mata in his Chelsea days but with an extraordinary work rate.
Before the season began, I remember watching Flex speaking to the "We Talk Ajax" fan channel.
One of the things that stuck in my mind was the Ajax fans saying" Don't be surprised to see Bruno playing wide right"
They were bang on the money!
Not only does it make it harder for opposition to prepare for us and therefore influence THEIR starting line up, it makes up for squad depth and it makes the players individually more intelligent positionally and tactically. What I wouldn't give to sit in on a training session and just soak it all in.
Ten Hag did the same with Ziyech at Ajax, who is also not a natural winger. But with his vision and passing, him cutting inside and putting a cross in to a forward near the far post he was always very dangerous. Like a midfielder coming from the wing. Bruno does the same. Works really well when other players go deep, and the rightback provides width and overlaps etc.
I like sancho at 10.
Always enjoy listening to your views ste, the best channels are the ones that have plenty insight
Beckham played on the right but wasn't expected to beat his man in the same way Giggs did. Bruno is giving similar sort of role in that sense. Both very industrious too
Ten Hag reintroducing Fergie's variety of "Tactical Anarchy," as Vincent Del Bosque described it
Love your tactical insight…it's enabled me to see the game differently. First class mate๐
Ten hag coming in is the best example out there of a manager coming in and making the change a manager can.
Unbelievable from last season.
May long it last it's a great time to be a Manchester United fan. I can honestly see this manager with a few ins and outs winning alot with this team. ๐๐ we have waiting a long time. Start with Barca then win our first cup in a what feels a life time and then kick on with the rest of the season. But top 4 and a cup be the dream. Anything else is icing on the cake
Its nice to see Ste in his element making tactics easier for his audience to digest after seeing them work out successfully in recent matches.
I miss Ole, he was just so damn likable… But Ten Hag is a real beast of a manager.
Martinez doesnโt have the legs for midfield, eth said this at Ajax. Do ur homework pal!
Getting players to be able to play in 2 positions minimum is genius. Creates fluidity in during play not just static positioning but dynamic
Beckham Fernandes
Yo Stephen, talk about Bennie's work with the forwards. He's definitely done great work with them. We've gone from a toothless squad thats lucky to score a goal, to a side that's almost always guaranteed to score 2 or more goals per game.
